National Indoor BMX Arena
The National Indoor BMX Arena is an indoor BMX racing facility, located in Sportcity, Manchester, United Kingdom. The arena was designed by Ellis Williams Architects and built by contractors Sir Robert McAlpine. It is situated next to the Manchester Velodrome and the buildings share a common entrance as part of the National Cycling Centre. The arena cost £24 million to construct, seats 2,000 spectators and was opened in 2011. It is home to British Cycling’s BMX programme, which has produced world champions Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips and Olympic champions Bethany Shriever and Charlotte Worthington. National Cycling Centre
The HSBC UK National Cycling Centre is a multipurpose cycling venue in Sportcity, Manchester, United Kingdom. It includes an indoor Velodrome and a BMX arena and outdoor mountain bike trials. It also has offices for British Cycling, the governing body for cycling in Britain. Venues Velodrome The velodrome of the HSBC UK National Cycling Centre was built in 1994 for Manchester Olympic bids. It was Britain's first indoor cycling track. It hosted track cycling events in the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the Revolution series and the UCI Track Cycling World Championships a record three times (1996, 2000 and 2008). More than 15 track cycling world records have been set on the track. Shanaze Reade
Shanaze Danielle Reade (born 23 September 1988 in Crewe, Cheshire, United Kingdom) is a British former bicycle motocross (BMX) racer and track cyclist whose prime competitive years began in 2002. She has won the UCI BMX World Championships three times. Reade is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Irish mother. Early years Reade was primarily raised by her grandparents after her mother gave birth to her at the age of 17. She has credited her grandfather with giving her the self-confidence to achieve success in her cycling career. Reade began racing in 1998 at the age of 10, at Tipkinder Park in Crewe. A local track operator named Bob Field, whose son also raced at the time, became her mentor. 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup
The 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup is a multi–race tournament over a season of BMX racing organised by the Union Cycliste Internationale. The season runs from 19 April to 28 September 2013. In this edition the World Cup consists of four rounds in Manchester, Santiago del Estero, Papendal and Chula Vista. Manchester, England The first round took place in Manchester at the National Indoor BMX Arena. As usual the competition consisted of a time-trail on the first day followed by heats and finals on the second day. Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips of Great Britain won the time-trial prizes and went on to win the finals. Charlotte Worthington
Charlotte Worthington (born 26 June 1996) is a British cyclist and Olympic gold medallist who competes internationally in Freestyle BMX. Biography Worthington was born in 1996. Worthington took up BMX seriously at the age of 20, and worked full-time as a chef at a Mexican restaurant near Chorlton for three years before Freestyle BMX was added to the Olympics in 2017. Worthington was accepted on to the Great Britain Cycling Team programme in Freestyle Park and 2019 saw her win the inaugural British and European titles, before she became the first ever British woman to win a world medal in the discipline, taking bronze at the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships in Chengdu behind Hannah Roberts of the US and the Chilean rider Macarena Perez Grasset. Bethany Shriever
Bethany Kate Shriever (born 19 April 1999) is an elite British cyclist, competing as a BMX racer. A World Junior champion in 2017, and winner of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup final event in Zolder in 2018, in 2021 she became the first British BMX racing cyclist in history to win both the Olympic and World titles in the same year. In 2022 Shriever completed the full set of gold medals by winning the 2022 UEC BMX Racing European Championships. Life Shriever was born in 1999 and she began BMX when she was aged nine years old. Thereafter she started training at her local club in Braintree and went on to start competing at weekends. Liam Peter Phillips (born 11 March 1989) is a BMX racing cyclist representing Great Britain. In 2013 he won the UCI BMX World Championships, his first. Having been cycling from the age of 5, he took up competitive BMX whilst a junior and won ten consecutive British titles. He won his first European title in 1999, and represented Great Britain at the 2008 Summer Olympics, at the 2012 Summer Olympics (despite having broken his collarbone shortly before) and at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Manchester Velodrome is an indoor Olympic-standard cycle-racing track in Manchester, England, which opened in 1994. Part of the National Cycling Centre, the facility has been home to British Cycling since 1994, coinciding with the nations rise to track cycling dominance at World and Olympic level.
