National Human Rights Society
The National Human Rights Society ( ms, Persatuan Kebangsaan Hak Asasi Manusia), better known locally by its acronym HAKAM, is a human rights non-governmental organisation (NGO) that works on human rights in Malaysia, human rights issues in Malaysia. HAKAM is considered to be one of the most vocal human rights NGOs in Malaysia. Anyone who is at least 18 years of age and a Malaysia citizen can be a member. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj ibni Almarhum Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah ( ms, تونكو عبد الرحمن ڤوترا الحاج ابن سلطان عبد الحميد حليم شاه, label= Jawi, script=arab, italic=unset; 8 February 19036 December 1990) was a Malaysian statesman and lawyer who served as the 1st Prime Minister of Malaysia and the head of government of its predecessor states from 1955 to 1970. As Malaya's first prime minister he dominated politics there for the next 13 years. Tun Hussein bin Dato' Onn ( ms, حسين بن عون, label= Jawi, script=arab, italic=unset; 12 February 1922 – 29 May 1990) was a Malaysian lawyer and politician who served as the 3rd Prime Minister of Malaysia from the death of his predecessor Abdul Razak Hussein in January 1976 to his retirement in July 1981. Moreover, he was the Member of Parliament (MP) for from 1974 to 1981, representing Barisan Nasional (BN) and United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan ( ta, அம்பிகா சீனிவாசன், Ampikā cīṉivācaṉ; born 1956) is a prominent Malaysian lawyer and human rights advocate, and one of eight recipients of the US International Women of Courage Award in 2009. She was the president of the Malaysian Bar Council from 2007 to 2009, and co-chairperson of Bersih, an NGO coalition advocating free and fair elections. Human Rights In Malaysia
The protection of basic human rights is enshrined in Constitution of Malaysia. These include liberty of the person (Article 5) and prohibition of slavery and forced labour (Article 6). At the national level, legislative measures that exist to prevent human rights violations and abuses can be found in acts and laws on issues that either have a human rights component or relate to certain groups of society whose rights may be at risk of being violated. Human rights groups are generally critical of the Malaysian government and the Royal Malaysia Police.
