The Golden Gloves is the name given to annual competitions for amateur boxing in the United States, where they are awarded a belt and a ring. And the title of nations champion is awarded. The Golden Gloves is a term used to refer to the National Golden Gloves competition, but can also represent several other amateur tournaments, including regional golden gloves tournaments and other notable tournaments such as the Intercity Golden Gloves, the Chicago Golden Gloves, and the New York Golden Gloves. History Arch Ward, sports editor of the ''Chicago Tribune'', came up with the idea of a citywide, Chicago amateur boxing tournament in 1923, and gained sponsorship from the ''Tribune'' in 1927. An annual tournament was held between Chicago and New York. In later years the idea was taken up by other cities, and a national tournament was held. Kenosha () is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the seat of Kenosha County. Per the 2020 census, the population was 99,986 which made it the fourth-largest city in Wisconsin. Jackie Beard
Jackie Beard (born September 10, 1961) is an American former professional boxer who competed from 1981 to 1995, twice challenging for the WBA super featherweight title between 1989 and 1990. As an amateur, he won a gold medal at the 1979 Pan American Games and the 1979 Boxing World Cup. He was also the first boxer to win three consecutive US amateur championships in the same weight class. Amateur career A native of Jackson, Tennessee, Beard began boxing at the age of eight, following his brother into the sport. He became an amateur standout in the late 1970s. He won the National AAU bantamweight championship three times (1978, 1979, and 1980), becoming the first boxer to win three straight Senior titles in the same weight class. He also won the bantamweight championship in the 1978 National Golden Gloves Tournament, upsetting defending champion Wayne Lynumn early in the tournament. Barnard Taylor
Bernard Taylor (born June 26, 1957) is an American former professional boxer. As an amateur, he won a gold medal at the 1979 Pan American Games and a silver at the 1975 Pan American Games. Amateur career Taylor had an incredible career as an amateur boxer, compiling a record of 481-8. Taylor qualified for the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but was unable to compete due to the 1980 Summer Olympics boycott.
