The National Gallery of Victoria Art School, associated with the National Gallery of Victoria, was a private fine arts college founded in 1867 and was Australia's leading art school of 50 years. It is also referred to as the 'National Gallery School' ‘National Gallery Art School’, ‘National Gallery School of Art’ and ‘Victorian National Gallery School of Art’. Official correspondence commencing from the 1950s is headed ‘National Gallery of Victoria Art School’ and in McCulloch’s ''Encyclopedia of Australian Art'', it is abbreviated 'NGC School'. It was the leading centre for academic art training in Australia until about 1910. Prahran College
The Prahran College of Advanced Education, formerly Prahran College of Technology, was a late-secondary and tertiary institution with a business school, a trade school, and a multi-disciplinary art school that dated back to the 1860s, populated by instructors and students who were among Australia’s significant artists, designers and performers. After undergoing various mergers, splits and incarnations over the years, the Prahran entity ceased to exist from 1 January 1992, when an Act of Parliament brought Prahran College of TAFE under the auspices of Swinburne University of Technology, with the only tertiary courses, Graphics and Industrial Design, remaining on the campus. George Bell (painter)
George Frederick Henry Bell (1 December 1878 – 22 October 1966) was an Australian painter and teacher, critic, portraitist, violinist and war artist who contributed significantly to the advancement of the local Modern movement from the 1920s to the 1930s. Early life and education He was born in Kew, Victoria, the son and fourth child of Clara (née Bowler) and George Bell, public servant, and educated at Kew High School. He studied at the National Gallery of Victoria Art School from 1896 to 1903 under Frederick McCubbin and painting master Bernard Hall as well as taking private instruction from George Coates 1895-6. Alan Sumner
Alan Robert Sumner, MBE (10 February 1911, Melbourne – 20 October 1994, Melbourne) was an Australian artist; a painter, printmaker, teacher and stained glass designer. Education Alan Sumner studied at Melbourne's National Gallery Art School in 1933, at Melbourne Technical College, and from 1933 to 1939 at the George Bell School, then 1950–52 at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris and the Courtauld Institute, London. Career Sumner was apprenticed as a stained-glass designer for the firm of Brooks Robinson, Melbourne then for fifteen years at E.L. Murray Griffin
Vaughan Murray Griffin (11 Nov 1903 – 29 January 1992) was an Australian print maker and painter. Life and work Commonly known as Murray Griffin, he was born in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern to Vaughan and Ethel Griffin. He spent most of his life living in the Eaglemont and Heidelberg area in Melbourne although he also travelled around country Victoria to paint and draw. He produced an extensive body of landscape paintings as well as portraits, but he is best known for his printmaking, where he was heavily influenced by Japanese woodcuts. Charles Wheeler (sculptor)
Sir Charles Thomas Wheeler (14 March 1892 – 22 August 1974) was a British sculptor who worked in bronze and stone who became the first sculptor to hold the presidency of the Royal Academy, from 1956 until 1966. Biography Wheeler was the son of a journalist and was born in Codsall, Staffordshire, and raised in nearby Wolverhampton. He studied at the Wolverhampton College of Art, now Wolverhampton University, under Robert Emerson, between 1908 and 1912. In 1912 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art where he studied under Édouard Lantéri until 1917. Throughout the remainder of World War I, Wheeler was classified as unfit for active service and instead modelled artificial limbs for war amputees. William Beckwith McInnes
William Beckwith McInnes (18 May 1889 – 9 November 1939) was an Australian portrait painter, winner of the Archibald Prize seven times for his traditional style paintings. He was acting-director at the National Gallery of Victoria and an instructor in its art school. Early life McInnes was born in St Kilda, a suburb of Melbourne, to Malcolm McInnes and his wife Alice Agnes, née Beckwith. Despite lack of family artistic tradition, he was keen to draw from the time he could hold a pencil. Lindsay Bernard Hall
Lindsay Bernard Hall (28 December 1859 – 14 February 1935) was an English-born Australian artist, teacher and art gallery director. Early life and career Hall was born at Garston, Liverpool, England, the son of a broker of the same family as Captain Basil Hall, writer of books of travel; his maternal grandfather was conductor J. Z. Herrmann. Hall was educated at Cheltenham College and grew up in an atmosphere of culture. He studied painting at the South Kensington School of Art, Antwerp and Munich, and worked for several years in London. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and was one of the original members of the New English Art Club. George Folingsby
George Frederick Folingsby (23 August 1828 – 4 January 1891) was an Irish-born Australian painter and art educator. Folingsby was born in the County of Wicklow, Ireland. At the age of 18 he emigrated to Canada. Later he went to New York Cit studied drawing and contributed illustrations to magazines of the day, including ''Harper's Magazine''. In 1852 he went to Munich and spent two years at the drawing school of the Royal Academy. He then went to Paris and for a few months was a pupil of Thomas Couture. Pam Hallandal
Pam Hallandal (January 16, 1929- September 25, 2018) was an Australian artist, best known for her work in drawing and print making. Early life and education Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1929 Hallandal was the daughter of an amateur painter and architect. She studied sculpture and ceramics and RMIT c.1950 and at the Central School of Art in London from 1956 - 1957. From the 1960s Pam's practice shifted to focus on drawing. She had originally enrolled in the sculpture department of RMIT, but was discouraged from attending because of her small stature and minimal limp, a result of childhood polio. William Kelly (artist)
William Joseph Kelly (born 1943) is an American artist, humanist and human-rights advocate. Education William Kelly was born in Buffalo, New York in 1943, and received his artistic training at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the National Gallery School in Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), his country of part-time residence since 1968. Gareth Sansom (born 19 November 1939) is an Australian artist, painter, printmaker and collagist and winner of the 2008 John McCaughey Memorial Prize of $100,000. Best known for introducing new themes and subject-matter into Australian art and being one of the first Australian artists to be influenced by Pop art, particularly British Pop artists like Peter Blake, Allen Jones, Derek Boshier, Joe Tilson and the formal strategies of the post-modernist R.
