National Action (Malta)
National Action ( mt, Azzjoni Nazzjonali, AN) was a right-wing Maltese political party active between 2007 and 2010. History The party was founded in June 2007, the two most prominent founders being Josie Muscat, a medical doctor and entrepreneur and a former MP of the Nationalist Party, and real estate magnate Anġlu Xuereb. Muscat was elected National Action's first Leader. The party was best known for its position on immigration. It believed that Malta should close its borders to illegal immigration and, where this is not possible, the European Union (of which Malta is a member) should be obliged to share Malta's burden of illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants should be hosted in Malta for not more than a month, then being moved on to other states. The party has also called for a directly elected President of Malta with expanded powers and politically unaffiliated, a smaller Parliament and a Council of State. Josie Muscat
Josie Muscat (born 31 July 1943) is a Maltese politician, a former Nationalist MP (1966–87), an independent local councillor in Marsascala (2006–09) and co-founder of Azzjoni Nazzjonali (AN(2007). He is a qualified doctor of medicine. Muscat was leader of the PN youth section from 1967 to 1973 and later headed its workers' section. He formed the Freedom Fighters Front after the 1981 election when Labour was re-elected with a majority of seats despite not getting the majority of votes. The grouping was a form of resistance action against Labour's authoritarian elements but its members were seen by many as sympathisers of European fascism. He broke from the party by voting against the constitutional amendments which preceded the 1987 elections, which he did not contest. General elections were held in Malta on 8 March 2008 to elect all Member of parliament, members of the Parliament of Malta, House of Representatives They were held alongside 2008 Maltese local elections, local elections. The elections were contested by the Nationalist Party (Malta), Nationalist Party, the Malta Labour Party, Labour party, six other parties and independents. The governing Nationalist Party led by Lawrence Gonzi won its third consecutive election against the Labour Party led by Alfred Sant, winning the popular vote by a margin of just 0.55% and with its majority in parliament reduced to just one seat.
