Nathan Young (Curler)
Nathan Young (born November 18, 2002) is a Canadians, Canadian curling, curler from Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador. He currently Skip (curling), skips his own team on the World Curling Tour. Career Young and his team have been competing together from a very young age. It was in 2015 when the rink claimed their first provincial championship in the U16 NLCA Provincials. From that point on it would be a few more years until the quartet won another provincial championship as they went straight up into competing with the U18 age group afterwards. In 2020, Young won his first provincial championship in the U18 category. Alongside Joel Krats who they picked up for the tournament due to Ben Stringer being aged out, they beat Team Liam Quinlan 8-1 in the finals to qualify for the Canadian U18 Curling Championships which was subsequently cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19. Canadian U18 Curling Championships
The Canadian U18 Curling Championships is an annual curling tournament held to determine the best juvenile-level curling team in Canada. Juvenile level curlers must be under the age of 18 as of June 30 in the year prior to the tournament. The 2017 Canadian U18 Curling Championships was the inaugural championship for both the men's and women's sides. The event is a continuation of the Optimist U18 International Curling Championships. The U18 Internationals consisted of teams from Canada, USA, and Japan, and ran from 2001 to 2016 on both the men's and women's sides. 2022 Canadian Junior Curling Championships
The 2022 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships was held from March 26 to April 1 at the Stratford Rotary Complex in Stratford, Ontario. The winning teams represented Canada at the 2023 World Junior Curling Championships in Füssen, Germany. This was the second time Stratford hosted the Canadian Junior Curling Championships. The first was in 2016 when Manitoba's Matt Dunstone and Nova Scotia's Mary Fay took home the titles. The 2022 event featured eighteen teams on both the men's and women's sides, each split into two pools of nine. The top three teams from each pool at the end of the round robin advanced to the playoff round. Based on results from the 2019 and 2020 events, certain provinces earned two berths to the championship. Nicholas Codner
Nicholas Codner (born March 23, 2006) is a Canadian curler from Torbay, Newfoundland and Labrador. He currently plays mate for the Team Simon Perry rink. He is known as the youngest person to ever compete in The Brier, when he played as an alternate for Nathan Young at the 2022 Tim Hortons Brier. He was 15. Career In 2020, the Simon Perry team won their first ever provincial championship in the U16 Newfoundland & Labrador Provincials. They were coached by Newfoundland & Labrador curler, Joel Krats. Codner made his curling debut on the competitive scene in 2021 when the Simon Perry rink participated in the 2021 Newfoundland and Labrador Tankard. They ended up finishing in last place with a record of 0-7. Their closest loss was against the Trent Skanes rink where they lost by two points. 2022 Tim Hortons Brier
The 2022 Tim Hortons Brier, Canada's national men's curling championship, was held from March 4 to 13 at the ENMAX Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta. In the final, the defending Olympic bronze medallist Brad Gushue Wild Card #1 team, which also include Mark Nichols, Brett Gallant and Geoff Walker from Newfoundland and Labrador defeated Alberta, skipped by Kevin Koe. It was Gushue's fourth career Brier title, and the team did it shorthanded, as Nichols missed the playoffs due to testing positive for COVID-19. According to Curling Canada, it was the first time a three-player team won a Brier final. Greg Smith (curler)
Gregory Smith (born June 18, 1996) is a Canadian curler from St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. He currently skips his own team out of the RE/MAX Centre. Career Smith skipped Team Newfoundland and Labrador at two consecutive Canadian Junior Curling Championships in 2015 and 2016 with his team of Ryan McNeil Lamswood, Kyle Barron and Craig Laing. In 2015, they had a 3–6 eleventh-place finish and in 2016, they finished in ninth with a 5–4 record. While still in juniors, Smith and his team played in the 2015 GSOC Tour Challenge Tier 2 which was held in Paradise, Newfoundland and Labrador. There, they finished with a winless 0–4 record. Smith played in his first Newfoundland and Labrador Tankard in 2018 with his new team of Matthew Hunt, Andrew Taylor and Ian Withycombe. The 2022 World Junior Curling Championships were held from May 15 to 22 at the Jönköping Curling Club in Jönköping, Sweden. The event was originally scheduled to be held March 5 to 12, however, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden. 2021 Tim Hortons Brier
The 2021 Tim Hortons Brier, Canada's national men's curling championship, was held from March 5 to 14 at the Markin MacPhail Centre at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta. In the final, Team Alberta, skipped by Brendan Bottcher defeated Team Wild Card 2, skipped by Kevin Koe in an all-Alberta final, and a re-match of the 2019 Brier final. It was Bottcher's first Brier championship after losing the previous three finals. The first six ends of the final were evenly matched with Koe leading 1–0 heading into the seventh end. In the seventh, Koe's first rock picked, and he missed a double on his second shot, allowing Bottcher a draw for three, to go up 3–1. The two teams exchanged singles in the 8th and 9th ends, and in the 10th end, with just 30 seconds left on their time clock, Koe conceded with one rock left, as his team had no possibilities to score two points to tie the game. The 2021 Newfoundland and Labrador Tankard, the men's provincial curling championship for Newfoundland and Labrador, was held from January 27 to 31 at the RE/MAX Centre in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The winning Greg Smith rink represented Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2021 Tim Hortons Brier, Canada's national men's curling championship in Calgary, Alberta. The event was held in conjunction with the 2021 Newfoundland and Labrador Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the provincial women's championship. The 2021 Tankard was one of the few provincial curling championships to be held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. While most provincial championships were cancelled, both the Newfoundland and Labrador men's and women's provincials were given the green light by the provincial government and chief medial officer.
