Via Domitia
The Via Domitia was the first Roman road built in Gaul, to link Italy and Hispania through Gallia Narbonensis, across what is now Southern France. The route that the Romans regularised and paved was ancient when they set out to survey it, and traces the mythic route travelled by Heracles. The construction of the road was commissioned by Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus, whose name it bore, following the defeat of the Allobroges and Averni by himself and Quintus Fabius Maximus Allobrogicus in 122 BCE. Domitius also established a fortified garrison at Narbo (modern Narbonne) on the coast, near Hispania, to guard construction of the road. It soon developed into a full Roman colony ''Colonia Narbo Martius''. The lands on the western part of the route, beyond the River Rhône had been under the control of the Averni who, according to Strabo, had stretched their control to Narbo and the Pyrenees. Crossing the Alps by the easiest passage, the Col de Montgenèvre (1850 m), the Via Domitia ...

Canal Du Midi
The Canal du Midi (; ) is a long canal in Southern France (french: le Midi). Originally named the ''Canal royal en Languedoc'' (Royal Canal in Languedoc) and renamed by French revolutionaries to ''Canal du Midi'' in 1789, the canal is considered one of the greatest construction works of the 17th century. The canal connects the Garonne to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean and, along with the long Canal de Garonne, forms the Canal des Deux Mers, joining the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Strictly speaking, ''"Canal du Midi"'' refers to the portion initially constructed from Toulouse to the Mediterranean – the Deux-Mers canal project aimed to link together several sections of navigable waterways to join the Mediterranean and the Atlantic: first the Canal du Midi, then the Garonne which was more or less navigable between Toulouse and Bordeaux, then the Garonne Lateral Canal built later, and finally the Gironde estuary after Bordeaux. Jean-Baptiste Colbert authorized t ...

Aude (river)
The Aude (; ; Latin ''Atax'' ) is a river of southern France that is long. Its source is in the Pyrenees mountains then runs to Carcassonne and finally reaches the Mediterranean Sea near Narbonne. The river is navigable by raft or canoe for nearly all of its length. It is registered as essential to the Languedoc-Roussillon region. The river gave its name to the Aude '' department''. Etymology In antiquity, the ''Aude'' was called ''Atax'' by the Romans. Some authors in antiquity called the river ''Narbôn'' (e.g. Polybius). In 1342 the Roussillon Cartulary of Alart called it the ''Auda'' or the ''Ribera d'Aude''.Jacques Amiel, ''L'AUDE. Fleuve du pays cathare'', Les presses du Languedoc, Montpellier, 1999 , p. 21. In the Middle Ages the terms ''Adice'', again ''Atax'', ''Fluvium Atacis'', ''Flumine Atace'', ''Flumen Ataze'', and ''Juxta Aditum fluvium'' were also used to designate the Aude. In all likelihood the current name comes from a gradual evolution of ''Atax'' given by St ...
