Nanuqsaurus
''Nanuqsaurus'' (meaning "polar bear lizard") is a genus of carnivorous tyrannosaurid theropod known from the Late Cretaceous period (early Late Maastrichtian stage) Prince Creek Formation of the North Slope of Alaska, United States. It contains a single species, ''Nanuqsaurus hoglundi'', known only from a partial skull and multiple undescribed postcranial and teeth elements. Discovery and naming In 2006, at the Kikak-Tegoseak Quarry, in North Slope Borough in the north of Alaska, fossils were found of a medium-sized theropod, with an estimated skull length of . These were first referred to ''Gorgosaurus'' and later to ''Albertosaurus''. After preparation in the Perot Museum of Nature and Science (Dallas Museum of Natural History) it was recognized these represented a species new to science. Tyrannosaurid
Tyrannosauridae (or tyrannosaurids, meaning "tyrant lizards") is a family of coelurosaurian theropod dinosaurs that comprises two subfamilies containing up to thirteen genera, including the eponymous ''Tyrannosaurus''. The exact number of genera is controversial, with some experts recognizing as few as three. All of these animals lived near the end of the Cretaceous Period and their fossils have been found only in North America and Asia. Although descended from smaller ancestors, tyrannosaurids were almost always the largest predators in their respective ecosystems, putting them at the apex of the food chain. Prince Creek Formation
The Prince Creek Formation is a geological formation in Alaska with strata dating to the Early Maastrichtian stage of the Late Cretaceous. Anthony Ricardo Fiorillo is a senior fellow at the Institute for the Study of Earth and Man at Southern Methodist University, but for many years he was vice president of research & collections and chief curator at the Perot Museum of Nature & Science. A native of Connecticut, he received his bachelor's at the University of Connecticut, his master's at the University of Nebraska and a Ph.D. in Vertebrate Paleontology from the University of Pennsylvania. Career Dr. Fiorillo worked on his Rea Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and later as a scientist at the University of California, Berkeley.
