Nanaimo City Council
The Nanaimo City Council is the governing body for the city of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada. The council consists of the mayor and eight councillors. The councillors are councillors-at-large elected for the entire city. Municipal elections are held every four years across the Province on the third Saturday of November. The first woman to be mayor in Nanaimo was Joy Leach (1990–1993), who defeated long-time mayor Frank Ney. City Council
A municipal council is the legislative body of a municipality or local government area. Depending on the location and classification of the municipality it may be known as a city council, town council, town board, community council, rural council, village council, or board of aldermen. Australia Because of the differences in legislation between the states, the exact definition of a city council varies. However, it is generally only those local government areas which have been specifically granted city status (usually on a basis of population) that are entitled to refer to themselves as cities. Nanaimo
Nanaimo ( ) is a city on the east coast of Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, Canada. As of the Canada 2021 Census, 2021 census, it had a population of 99,863, and it is known as "The Harbour City." The city was previously known as the "Hub City," which was attributed to its original layout design, whose streets radiated from the shoreline like the spokes of a wagon wheel, and to its central location on Vancouver Island. Joy Leach
Joy Leach, (born 1942 in Nanaimo, died August 2014 in Nanaimo), was a Canadian politician. She was Nanaimo's first female mayor and former president of the BC School Trustees Association and a Nanaimo school board trustee. Biography Leach grew up in Parksville, British Columbia, where both her father and grandfather were politicians. She was the first female president of Qualicum's high school. In 1977, she was elected to Nanaimo's board of school trustees; over the next seven years, she served as chair three times and became president of the BC School Trustees Association. For a time, Leach lived in Munich, working on a US army base, before marrying her first husband and living throughout the US and then returning to Nanaimo in the early 1970s. Frank Ney
Frank James Ney (May 12, 1918 – November 24, 1992) was a mayor of Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada, serving for twenty-one years. Ney also served a term as a member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia. He was known for his outgoing personality, his habit of attending civic events and dressing up like a pirate for the appearances, and playing a central role in initiating the bathtub races across Georgia Strait from Nanaimo to Vancouver. He was an active skier, swimmer, figure skater and boater. During the 1950/1951 season he was President of the Nanaimo Figure Skating Club. He also, while Mayor, initiated the creation of cut-away corners of sidewalk curbs in downtown Nanaimo after spending one day in a wheelchair in order to experience for himself the difficulties in getting around experienced by those in wheelchairs. Leonard Krog
Leonard Eugene Krog is a Canadian politician and lawyer in British Columbia, who currently serves as Mayor of Nanaimo. Prior to his tenure as mayor, Krog served in the provincial legislature, and was first elected in the 1991 general election representing the riding of Parksville-Qualicum. In his first term, he served as a backbencher in the Mike Harcourt NDP government. He ran for re-election in 1996 but was defeated by Paul Reitsma. Paul Manly
Paul Manly is a Canadian politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nanaimo—Ladysmith from 2019 until 2021. A member of the Green Party of Canada, he was elected to the House of Commons in a by-election on May 6, 2019, making him the second elected Green federal MP in Canadian history, following party leader Elizabeth May's first election victory in the 2011 federal election.
