Nana Konadu Yiadom III
Nana Konadu Yiadom III is the Queen mothers (Africa), Queen mother (''Asantehemaa'') of the Ashanti Kingdom. She is the 14th Queen mother of the kingdom. Early life Nana Ama Konadu was born Nana Ama Konadu to Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II and Opanin Kofi Fofie of Besease, near Atimatim in the Kwabre District of Ashanti. She is popularly known as Nana Panin as she is the first daughter of the late Asantehemaa. She is the eldest sister of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II. Reign Yiadom was enstooled as the Asantehemaa with the stool name Nana Konadu Yiadom III, after succeeding her mother and predecessor Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II who died on 15 November 2016 in her sleep, aged 109. Akan Chieftaincy
In many parts of West Africa, there is an old chieftaincy tradition, and the Akan people have developed their own hierarchy, which exists alongside the democratic structure of the country. The Akan word for the ruler or one of his various courtiers is "Nana" (). In colonial times, Europeans translated it as "chief", but that is not an exact equivalent. Other sources speak of "kings", which is also not entirely correct, especially in the case of the said courtiers. Manhyia Palace
The Manhyia Palace (Akan language meaning ''Oman'' – gathering of the people) is the seat of the Asantehene, as well as his official residence. It is located at Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region. The first palace is now a museum. Otumfuor Opoku Ware II built the new palace, which is close to the old one and is used by the current Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II. History The palace was built in 1925 by Britain some time after the Third Anglo-Ashanti War in 1874, when the British had demolished the original palace built by Asantes. Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II (1907 – 15 November 2016) was the Queen mother (''Ohemaa'') of the Ashanti Kingdom and mother of the current Asantehene, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II, who is the youngest son of her five children. She was the 13th Queen mother of the Ashanti Kingdom. Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II died on 15 November 2016 in her sleep, aged 109. She may be the longest-lived member of any royal family. She was buried at dawn in a full ceremony at the Breman Royal Mausoleum (Ban mu) on 20 January 2017, after her remains were removed from the Bantama Royal Mausoleum in order to receive final traditional rites.
