Namibia National Students Organisation
The Namibia National Students Organisation (NANSO) is a national student organisation in Namibia. It was founded on 2 June 1984 in Döbra, about north of the capital Windhoek. Student Representation NANSO has been representing Namibian students nationally since its inception in 1984. In 2016, the student organisation organised mass movements of Namibian students to demand free registration fees at the country's two major universities. Windhoek
Windhoek (, , ) is the capital and largest city of Namibia. It is located in central Namibia in the Khomas Highland plateau area, at around above sea level, almost exactly at the country's geographical centre. The population of Windhoek in 2020 was 431,000 which is growing continually due to an influx from all over Namibia. Windhoek is the social, economic, political, and cultural centre of the country. Nearly every Namibian national enterprise, governmental body, educational and cultural institution is headquartered there. The Students Union of Namibia (SUN) is a students organisation in Namibia. It was formed in 2019 by a break-away faction of the Namibia National Students Organization (NANSO). In 2019 NANSO members were involved in ideological differences over ways in which Namibian students needed to be represented. They accused the president of NANSO, its secretary general and secretary to the students president as being captured by members of the SWAPO Party Youth League. This preceded a public altercation aired on Namibian Broadcasting Corporation news in April 2019. In it, the president of NANSO was chased out of a meeting by student leaders accusing her of "selling out the struggle to politicians". This infighting at NANSO, until then the only national students' organisation, caused the suspension of some of its leaders and the withdrawal of a number of its members. Namibia Students Financial Assistance Fund (NSFAF) is a government student bursary and loan scheme which provides loans for undergraduate students to help pay for the cost of their tertiary education. It was formed in 1995 and is run under the Ministry of Higher Education. University of Namibia Student Representative Council (also known as the UNAM SRC) was founded on 20 February 1992, and is recognised as the legal representative body for the students of the University of Namibia by the University of Namibia Act 18 of 1992. It is responsible for representing the interests of the students to the management of the University and to local and national government. The ''New Era'' is a daily national newspaper owned by the government of Namibia. The newspaper is one of four daily national newspapers in the country, the others being ''The Namibian'' (English and Oshiwambo), ''Die Republikein'' (Afrikaans) and '' Allgemeine Zeitung'' (German). Fransina Kahungu (born 1970) is a Namibian female politician serving as a City of Windhoek Councilor, where she previously served as Deputy Mayor of Windhoek in 2016 and 2017 and Mayor of Windhoek from 2019 to 2020. Early life and career Kahungu hails from the village of Okapanda. In order to receive a diploma in education at the University of Namibia, she moved to Windhoek in 1994. Pohamba Penomwenyo Shifeta (born 27 March 1968) is a Namibian politician. He is Namibia's Minister of Environment and Tourism since his appointment by president Hage Geingob in March 2015. Early life and education Shifeta was born at Ongenga in the Ohangwena Region. He had been active in the SWAPO-led National Union of Namibian Workers and Namibia National Students Organisation since 1988.
