Nai (pan Flute)
The nai (archaic: muscal) is a Romanian diatonic pan flute used since the 17th century in a lot of genres. Structure The nai has usually at least 20 pipes made of bamboo or reed. They are arranged in a curved array, allowing a greater speed of play. Generally the longer, lower pipes are on the right. The pitch of each pipe is adjusted with beeswax; usually nais are tuned in G for Romanian folk music, or in C for classical. Traditional Romanian pan flutes have tubes with varying diameters which go from wide to narrow as you go up the scale, to maintain the volume/length ratio of the tube and therefore produce the best consistent tone quality. A pan flute (also known as panpipes or syrinx) is a musical instrument based on the principle of the closed tube, consisting of multiple pipes of gradually increasing length (and occasionally girth). Multiple varieties of pan flutes have been popular as folk instruments. The pipes are typically made from bamboo, Arundo donax, giant cane, or local reeds. Bamboo
Bamboos are a diverse group of evergreen perennial flowering plants making up the subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae. Giant bamboos are the largest members of the grass family. The origin of the word "bamboo" is uncertain, but it probably comes from the Dutch or Portuguese language, which originally borrowed it from Malay or Kannada. Beeswax (''cera alba'') is a natural wax produced by honey bees of the genus ''Apis''. The wax is formed into scales by eight wax-producing glands in the abdominal segments of worker bees, which discard it in or at the hive. Damian Drăghici (born 31 March 1970, Bucharest) is a Romanian musician of Romani origin. He is a musician, best known as the leadear of the Damian and Brothers band and a nai player and is a noted exponent of this instrument in the world of jazz. Early life Drăghici was born in Bucharest to a family of ''lăutari'' whose distinguished musical heritage dates back at least seven generations. Gheorghe Zamfir (; born April 6, 1941) is a Romanian nai (pan flute) musician. Zamfir is known for playing an expanded version of normally 20-pipe nai, with 22, 25, 28 or even 30 pipes, to increase its range, and obtaining as many as eight overtones (additional to the fundamental tone) from each pipe by changing his embouchure. He is known as "The Master of the Pan Flute". Career Zamfir came to the public eye when he was approached by Swiss ethnomusicologist Marcel Cellier, who extensively researched Romanian folk music in the 1960s. The composer Vladimir Cosma brought Zamfir with his pan flute to Western European countries for the first time in 1972 as the soloist in Cosma's original music for the movie ''Le grand blond avec une chaussure noire''. Fănică Luca (born Ştefan Luca Iordache; 5 April 1894 – 26 October 1968) was a Romani-Romanian musician and a Romanin pan pipe ('' nai'') virtuoso, who was the first to make this instrument popular outside his own country. Background He learned music from his father (who also played the ''nai'', the Romanian pan pipe, in a band (taraf) of Lăutari) and brothers. Fănică Luca himself would also play in such orchestras, developing great skills and gaining a reputation as a pan pipe virtuoso. In the 19th century the ''nai'' - originally an instrument of the lăutari with only 8 to 10 pipes, covering a little more than one octave - had been extended to about 20 pipes, giving far greater possibilities to a solo performer.
