NWSL Draft
The NWSL Draft is an annual event which takes place in January of each year where the teams of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) select players who are in their senior season in college or have exhausted their collegiate eligibility. Prior to 2021, it was known as the NWSL College Draft. The NWSL Draft was first instituted in 2013 a few months prior to the start of the inaugural season of the league. The draft is composed of four rounds in which each club has a selection, the order of which is determined by a combination of the teams' playoff and regular season positions, with the last-placed team or any expansion teams picking first. National Women's Soccer League
The National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is a professional women's soccer league at the top of the United States league system. It is owned by the teams and, until 2020, was under a management contract with the United States Soccer Federation. The NWSL was established in 2012 as the successor to Women's Professional Soccer (WPS; 2007–2012), which was itself the successor to Women's United Soccer Association (2001–2003). Portland Thorns FC
The Portland Thorns FC is an American professional women's soccer team based in Portland, Oregon. Established in 2012, the team began play in 2013 in the then-eight-team National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), which receives support from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF). The Portland franchise is owned by Peregrine Sports LLC, which also owns the Portland Timbers. Alongside the Thorns, the Houston Dash and Orlando Pride are other NWSL teams with Major League Soccer affiliations. In its inaugural season, the Portland Thorns FC placed third during the regular season and, in the playoffs, won the first NWSL championship. Emily Fox (soccer)
Emily Ann Fox (born July 5, 1998) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a defender for North Carolina Courage of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) and the United States national team. She played college soccer for the North Carolina Tar Heels. College career In 2017, Fox started the first thirteen games of her freshman season with the Tar Heels before suffering a torn ACL and missed the remainder of the season. She was named to the third team All-ACC and the All-Freshman Team in 2017. In 2018, Fox returned to the starting lineup, and at one point started eighteen straight games. Due to her call-up to the USWNT in November 2018, Fox missed the ACC Tournament Semi-Finals and Final as well as the first round of the NCAA Tournament. 2021 NWSL Draft
The 2021 NWSL Draft was the ninth annual meeting of National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) franchises to select eligible college players. It was held on January 13, 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was the first NWSL Draft to be held virtually via videoconferencing and web streaming. Format * All 10 teams of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) take turns making their selections over four rounds, with 10 picks per round. Sophia Smith (soccer, Born 2000)
Sophia Olivia Smith (born August 10, 2000) is an American soccer player who plays for Portland Thorns FC in the National Women's Soccer League and the United States national team. In March 2017, she was called up to the senior national team for two international friendlies against Russia. She played in college for Stanford University, helping her team win the national title in 2019. On January 16, 2020, she was selected by the Thorns as the top overall pick in the 2020 NWSL College Draft. Early life Smith attended Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, Colorado. She was named First-Team All-Conference her freshman year. Smith also played for the varsity basketball team. Tierna Lillis Davidson (born September 19, 1998) is an American soccer player for the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), the highest division of women's professional soccer in the United States, and the United States national team. She was drafted first overall by the Chicago Red Stars in the 2019 NWSL College Draft after playing three years at Stanford. Andi Maureen Sullivan (born December 20, 1995) is an American soccer player who plays for the Washington Spirit in the National Women's Soccer League and the United States women's national soccer team. The Boston Breakers were an American professional soccer club based in the Boston neighborhood of Allston. The team competed in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). They replaced the original Breakers, who competed in the defunct Women's United Soccer Association, as the Boston area's professional women's soccer team.
