The North Eastern Railway (NER) 1001 Class was a class of long-boiler 0-6-0 steam locomotive designed by William Bouch. History The "long boiler" design dated back to a Stephenson design of 1842. At that time there was a controversy about keeping the centre of gravity low. His ideas led to the design of the highly successful Jenny Lind locomotive. The long boiler design with coupled wheels continued for slower heavier work. A total of 192 NER 1001 class locomotives were built from 1852 by a number of private manufacturers, as well as the NER's own works at Darlington and Shildon. Darlington Railway Works
Darlington Works was established in 1863 by the Stockton and Darlington Railway in the town of Darlington in the north east of England. The main part of the works, the North Road Shops was located on the northeast side of the Stockton and Darlington Railway (now part of the Tees Valley Line) History NER period The first new locomotive was built at the works in 1864. Though the railway had amalgamated with the North Eastern Railway (NER) in 1863, it continued to build its own designs for a number of years. In 1877, the first North Eastern designs appeared. Hartley, Cumberland
Hartley is a village and civil parish in the Eden district of Cumbria, England. It is about east of Kirkby Stephen. The area has many old lead and copper mines that are now abandoned as well as having a large quantity of iron haematite, ironstone and ore. At the highest peak in Hartley stand nine obelisks referred to as "Nine Standards". Nobody knows the true purpose of the "Nine Standards" although some believe that they were used to create a sense of a forthcoming army to scare the enemy forces. Jenny Lind Locomotive
Jenny Lind was the first of a class of ten steam locomotives built in 1847 for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) by E. B. Wilson and Company of Leeds, named after Jenny Lind, who was a famous Swedish opera singer of the period. The general design proved to be so successful that the manufacturers adopted it for use on other railways, and it became the first mass-produced locomotive type. John Gray (locomotive Engineer)
John Gray was an early English steam locomotive engineer who introduced several innovations in locomotive design during the 1830s and 1840s. John Gray's origins were thought to be unknown but he appears to have originated from Newcastle. John Gray was born 29 August 1810 in Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. William Bouch
William Bouch (; 1813–1876) was an English railway engineer, who is famous for the steam locomotives he designed for the Stockton and Darlington Railway. In 1860, Bouch designed the first British standard gauge locomotives to use a 4-4-0 wheel layout which had earlier become popular in the United States. Career William Bouch was apprenticed to Robert Stephenson and Company and later served in the Russian Navy. He became Locomotive Engineer of the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1840. Shildon Railway Works
Shildon railway works opened in 1833 in the town of Shildon in County Durham, England. Originally built to serve the Stockton and Darlington Railway the works grew to cover ( roofed), employing 2750 staff. History Shildon was the terminus of the Stockton & Darlington Railway (S&DR), when it opened in 1825. Its first locomotive superintendent was Timothy Hackworth, who maintained their locomotives at the Soho Works. Thomas Hackworth (Timothy's brother) was works manager at the Soho Works. The beginnings of the works were small - In 1827, Timothy Hackworth built the locomotive Royal George at the Soho Works.
