NCSIST Chien Hsiang
The NCSIST Chien Hsiang (Taiwanese: kiàm-siông; English "Rising Sword”) is a Taiwanese anti-radiation loitering munition developed by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology. Overview The Chien Hsiang is two meters wide, and 1.2 meters long. It features anti-radiation payload. While the Chien Hsiang is comparable to the Israeli IAI Harpy, NCSIST has said that any resemblance is purely coincidental and that the platform is entirely indigenous. The Chien Hsiang has a reported loiter time of 100 hours and a top speed of 185 km/h. History The Chien Hsiang was first exhibited in 2017 at the Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition. In 2019 the Taiwan Air Force’s Air Defense and Missile Command announced a five year, NT$80b (US$2.54b) project to build up a full force of anti-radiation UAVs. National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST; ) is a Taiwanese state owned corporation, formerly part of the Republic of China Ministry of National Defense's Armaments Bureau, which is active in the development, manufacturing, support, and sustainment of various weapons systems and dual use technologies. The IAI Harpy is a loitering munition produced by Israel Aerospace Industries. The Harpy is designed to attack radar systems and is optimised for the suppression of enemy air defences (SEAD) role. It carries a high explosive warhead. The Harpy has been sold to several foreign nations, including South Korea, Turkey, India, and China. History In 2004, the Harpy became the focus of the effort by the United States to restrict arms transfers and the sales of advanced military technology to China. Sold to China in 1994 for around US$55 million, the loitering munitions were returned to Israel in 2004 under contract to be upgraded. The United States, fearing that the Harpy would pose a threat to Taiwanese and American forces in the case of a war with China, demanded that Israel seize the loitering munitions and nullify the contract. The Taipei Aerospace & Defense Technology Exhibition (TADTE; ) is a biennial defense exhibition held in Taiwan. TADTE is organized by the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA). It is held biennially. Repeat exhibitors include both local firms such as, Lungteh Shipbuilding, foreign companies such as Lockheed Martin, and military concerns such as National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology and the Republic of China Army arsenals (primarily the 202, 205 and 209). The Cardinal, is a family of small unmanned aerial vehicles made by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology. Variants Cardinal I The Cardinal I was the initial prototype of the Cardinal. Cardinal II The Cardinal II began development in 2009 and is based on the Cardinal I but has a better payload design, digital data link, and automatic tracking antenna system. It was exhibited at the 2015 Paris Air Show. In service with Republic of China Marine Corps and Republic of China Army. Other than military missions the Cardinal II can be used for civil remote sensing and disaster relief missions. The components of a Cardinal II system are the aircraft, an antenna, and a ground control box. The Cardinal II is hand launched and recovered by parachute.
