NCAA Basketball Tournament Selection Process
The selection process for college basketball's NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Basketball Tournaments determine which teams (68 men's and 68 women's) will enter the tournaments (the centerpieces of the basketball championship frenzy known as "March Madness") and their seedings and matchups in the knockout bracket. Currently, thirty-two (32) teams gain automatic entry through winning their conference's championship. The remaining teams (36 men's, 36 women's) rely on the selection committee to award them an at-large bid in the tournament. The selection process primarily takes place on Selection Sunday and the days leading up to it. Selection Sunday is also when the men's brackets and seeds are released to the public. After beginning in 2022, the women's championship brackets and seeds are also announced on Sunday. In United States colleges, top-tier basketball is governed by collegiate athletic bodies including National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA). Each of these various organizations is subdivided into one to three divisions, based on the number and level of scholarships that may be provided to the athletes. Each organization has different conferences to divide up the teams into groups. Teams are selected into these conferences depending on the location of the schools. The Iowa State Cyclones are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Iowa State University, located in Ames. The university is a member of the Big 12 Conference and competes in NCAA Division I, fielding 16 varsity teams (6 men's and 10 women's teams) in 12 sports. The "Cyclones" name dates back to 1895. Nina E. King (born October 3, 1978) is an American college sports administrator who is currently the vice president, director of athletics and adjunct professor of business administration at Duke University. She was named the director of athletics for the Blue Devils following athletic director Kevin White's retirement on September 1, 2021, the third Black woman to be an athletic director in a power conference. Keith Gill is the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, a collegiate athletic conference in the United States. As such, Gill is also the first African-American to serve as a commissioner of any FBS conference in NCAA history.
