Néo-trad
Néo-trad is a musical style from Quebec that arose around the turn of the 21st century. It can be considered a subgenre of '' Québécois'' Folk music. The term combines the Greek prefix ''neo'', meaning ''new'', and the contraction of the word ''traditionnelle'', as in ''traditional music''. It basically constitutes modernized Quebec folklore music, usually with rock and/or electronica. Some notable néo-trad artists are Mes Aïeux, Les Cowboys Fringants and Mara Tremblay. Okoumé can also be considered a néo-trad precursor. The expression can also encompass all Trad groups, modern times bands playing ''Québécois'' folklore (in a traditional way) like La Bottine Souriante, Les Charbonniers de l'enfer, La Volée d'Castors and Les Batinses. Inversely, the term ''Trad'' can encompass ''néo-trad'' groups. Les Cowboys Fringants
Les Cowboys Fringants are a Quebec folk rock music group formed in 1995 in Repentigny, Quebec. The French word ''fringant'' can be translated as "dashing", or "frisky". They perform '' Québécois'' néo-trad music (modernized Quebec folk music with a rock flavour) and draw on country music. They have an international underground following, especially in France, French-speaking Belgium and Switzerland. Band members hail from the Montreal suburbs of Repentigny and L'Assomption. The entire band collaborates on the lyrics, although guitarist Jean-François Pauzé often contributes more than the others. The band are known for their live performances, captured on the ''Attache ta tuque!'' live album and the ''Centre Bell 30 décembre 2003'' DVD. Mes Aïeux
Mes Aïeux ( en, italic=yes, My Ancestors) is a neo-traditional Quebec folk music group founded in 1996. Style Although a leader of the Quebec " neo-traditional" scene, the band takes a definitely modern slant on that style, borrowing stories and characters from French Canadian folklore (the devil, the chasse-galerie, the shepherdess, the coureur des bois, drinking songs, etc.) to write about modern themes with a touch of humor. Quebec Music
Like many cosmopolitan cities, Quebec is a home for all genres of music. From folk music to hip hop, music has always played an important role in Quebecer culture. In the 1920s and '30s singer/songwriter Madam Bolduc performed comedic songs in a folk style with Irish influences. Quebec's most popular artists of the last century include the singers: Félix Leclerc (1950s), Gilles Vigneault (1960s–present), Kate and Anna McGarrigle (1970s–present) and Céline Dion (1980s–present). The First Nations and the Inuit of Quebec also have their own traditional music. A local variety of Celtic music is also found. Quebec also has many well-known jazz musicians and a culture of classical music. La Volée D'Castors
La Volée d'Castors (''A Flock of Beavers'') is a Canadian folk music, folk music group formed in 1993. Since the late 1990s, they performed in Quebec and have toured 15 countries. History The band from the Lanaudière region was formed in 1993 by Nicolas Froment, Mathieu Lacas, Martin Mailhot, and Sébastien Parent. Their first album, ''Galant'', was released in 1994. In 1995 they were joined by Frédéric Bourgeois from Sainte-Marie-Salomé, and for the first time they performed outside the province of Quebec, at the Northern Lights Festival Boréal in Greater Sudbury, Sudbury, Ontario. Les Charbonniers De L'enfer
Les Charbonniers de l'Enfer are an ''a cappella'' folk music group formed in Quebec, Canada, in 1994. History The group is part of a revival in interest in Quebec's folk music. It was formed by five experienced singers who have been part of the regional folk music scene for more than 30 years: Michel Faubert, Normand Miron, Jean-Claude Mirandette, Michel Bordeleau, and André Marchand. Their instrumental accompaniment is limited to the jaw harp and foot tapping. The musicians also work in other projects and the band's appearances are relatively rare. The group includes two former members of La Bottine Souriante (Bordeleau and Marchand). La Bottine Souriante
La Bottine Souriante is a folk band from Canada. The band specializes in traditional French Canadian folk music, often with a modern twist. Formed in 1976 by Yves Lambert, Andre Marchand, and Mario Forest, they have toured extensively through Europe and North America. In 1990, the band integrated a four-piece horn section with traditional instruments such as accordion, fiddle, guitar, piano and double bass, in order to add an element of jazz to their music. In 1998, they contributed a song to the Canadian Celtic music compilation by The Chieftains, ''Fire in the Kitchen''. The group's name means "the smiling boot", which refers to the appearance of a work boot with worn-out soles.
