Nysø Manor
Nysø Manor, located near Præstø in the southeast of the Danish island of Sealand, was built in 1673 for Jens Lauridsen, a local functionary. It now houses the Thorvaldsen Collection, a group of works by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, who lived and worked there in his later years. Architecture The first manor house in Denmark to be designed in the Baroque style, it is built in red brick and sandstone with a red-tiled roof and a granite plinth as a foundation. It is thought to be the work of master builder Ewert Janssen who probably also built Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen shortly afterwards. The house consists of a main wing with 11 bays and lateral wings to the north with an entrance in between. The central projects on the north and south sides are decorated with four Ionic pilasters which support triangular pediments. Præstø
Præstø () is a town with a population of 3,857 (1 January 2022) in Vordingborg Municipality in Region Sjælland on the east coast of the island of Zealand (''Sjælland''). The islands of '' Maderne'', ''Storeholm'', and ''Lilleholm'' are part of the Præstø Fjord Wildlife reserves (''Præstø Fjord Vildtreservat''). Præstø was the seat of the former Præstø municipality (Danish, '' kommune''). As of January 1, 2007, Præstø municipality ceased to exist as the result of ''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). It was merged with Langebæk, Møn, and Vordingborg municipalities to form an enlarged Vordingborg municipality. The Baroque (, ; ) is a style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture, poetry, and other arts that flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until the 1750s. Thorvaldsen Museum
The Thorvaldsen Museum is a single-artist museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, dedicated to the art of Danish Neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844), who lived and worked in Rome for most of his life (1796–1838). The museum is located on the small island of Slotsholmen in central Copenhagen next to Christiansborg Palace. Designed by Michael Gottlieb Bindesbøll, the building was constructed from 1838 to 1848 following a public collection of funds in 1837. Christine Stampe
Christine Stampe, ''née'' Dalgas (20 April 1797 – 5 May 1868), was a Danish noblewoman known as one of the chief benefactors of the Danish/Icelandic sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. Biography Christine Marguerite Salome Dalgas married Baron Henrik Stampe (b. 1795). They had two sons, and her granddaughter Astrid became a women's rights activist. After their marriage, the Stampes initially lived at Christinelund, a farm belonging to Nysø Manor on the island of Zealand. Christinelund, which Henrik named for his wife, is now on the Danish registry of protected buildings. A few years later, they moved into the main house on Nysø Manor, where they hosted many notable Danish artists and writers, including the writer Hans Christian Andersen and the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
