Nylands Nation
Nylands Nation (NN) is one of the 15 student nations at the University of Helsinki, Finland's oldest, Swedish-speaking and established in 1643 at The Royal Academy of Turku. In 1828, the Academy moved to Helsinki taking the name "University" and Nylands Nation moved there along with the other Nations. Since 1904 the house of Nylands Nation, a building designed by Karl Hård af Segerstad, has stood at Kasarmikatu 40. Samuel Hartman
Samuel Donald Hartman (18 November 1900, New York - 23 March 1958, Palm Springs, California) was an American screenwriter and director and former production head of Paramount Pictures. He and Stephen Morehouse Avery were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Story for ''The Gay Deception'' (1935). He was also nominated with Frank Butler for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for ''Road to Morocco'' in 1942. Biography Hartman was born in Brooklyn, where his father ran the Park Circle Theatre. Hartman ran away from home to Chicago, where he worked as a bellhop, before returning to New York, where he worked in a bank. At 17 he moved to Texas, working as a truck driver. Johan Fredrik Wallenius (14 August 1765 – 12 January 1836) was a Finnish physician and botanist. Frans Michael Franzén
Frans Michael Franzén (9 February 1772 – 14 August 1847) was a Swedish-Finnish poet and clergyman. He served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Härnösand. Biography Franzén was born in Oulu ( sv, Uleåborg), Northern Ostrobothnia, Sweden (now part of Finland). At thirteen he entered the Royal Academy of Turku, where he attended the lectures of Henrik Gabriel Porthan (1739–1804), a pioneer in the study of Finnish history and folklore. He graduated in 1789, and became ''eloquentiae docens'' in 1792. Three years later he started on a tour through Denmark, Germany, France and England, returning in 1796 to accept the office of university librarian at Turku in Finland. Lars Tammelin (2 May 1669 – 2 July 1733) also known as Laurentius Gabrielis Tammelinus was a Finnish mathematician and prelate who was the Bishop of Turku from 1728 to 1733. Biography Tammelin was born on 2 May 1669 in Turku in the Swedish Empire, the son of Gabriel Larsson Tammelinus and Anna Eriksdotter Pihl. He began his studies in Turku and was enrolled at the academy in Turku in 1683. In 1698 he became a professor of mathematics at the Royal Academy of Turku. In August of the following year, he undertook a study trip through Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands where he enrolled at Leiden University on 27 November 1698. He studied under the Cartesian mathematician and astronomer Burchard de Volder, and returned to Finland in the autumn term of 1699.
