Nurlan Motuev is a Kyrgyz politician from the Jumgal area of Naryn province, popularly nicknamed the ''King of Coal'' after seizing control of the Karakeche coal mines during 2005. Karakeche
Karakeche ( ky, Каракече, also ''Kara-Keche'') is a coal mining area in Jumgal District, Naryn Region, Kyrgyzstan. It is located in the valley of the river Karakeche (Naryn basin), between the mountain ranges Moldo Too and Kabak Too, 25–30 km south of Chaek. It is the site of five open cast coal mines, source of around half of Kyrgyzstan's national coal production with estimated reserves of 438 million tonnes. This coal is mostly sent to Bishkek via the railway at Balykchy. The extension of that railway all the way to Karakeche was proposed in 2013 while other reports have suggested that the mines might be offered to China in return for the construction of a trans-Kyrgyzstan railway linking Andijan, Uzbekistan with Kashgar, China. 2009 Kyrgyzstani Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Kyrgyzstan on 23 July 2009. The date was set after the constitutional court ruled that the extension of the presidential term from four to five years did not apply until the next presidential election, calling for elections by 25 October 2009; in response, a parliament committee proposed the July election date, which was then passed by the incumbent president Kurmanbek Bakiyev's Ak Jol-dominated parliament. Bakiyev had previously announced his intention to run for reelection. Bakiyev was re-nominated on 1 May 2009. On election day the main opposition candidate, Almazbek Atambayev, withdrew from the contest, citing his belief that fraud was employed extensively and thus considers the election illegitimate.
