Nuremberg–Schwandorf Railway
The Nuremberg–Schwandorf railway is a 93.7 km long railway from Nuremberg, running along the Pegnitz (river), Pegnitz river, to Hersbruck and continuing via Neukirchen bei Sulzbach-Rosenberg and Amberg to Schwandorf station, Schwandorf in the German state of Bavaria. It runs parallel to the Nuremberg–Cheb railway, Nuremberg–Cheb line (the ''Right Pegnitz line'', german: rechte Pegnitzstrecke) between Nuremberg and Pommelsbrunn and this section is known as the ''Left Pegnitz line'' (''linke Pegnitzstrecke''). Hersbruck–Pommelsbrunn Railway
The Hersbruck–Pommelsbrunn railway is a 5.4 km long mainline railway in the German state of Bavaria, which connects the Nuremberg–Cheb railway, Nuremberg–Cheb and Nuremberg–Schwandorf railway, Nuremberg–Schwandorf lines to each other. History Iron ore was long mined in the Auerbach in der Oberpfalz, Auerbach area. The Hersbruck–Pommelsbrunn link was built by the Bavarian State Railways for the carriage of this ore to the former Maxhütte steelworks in Sulzbach-Rosenberg and it was opened on 15 October 1877. Doggerstollen
The Doggerstollen was a subcamp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp in World War II, close to the village of Happurg. It was an underground factory, where the production of BMW aircraft engines was planned. The Doggerstollen was built by approximately 9500 prisoners of whom 4000 died (" Extermination through labor", german: Vernichtung durch Arbeit). History The construction work began in May 1944 under the code name ''Dogger''. The underground factory was planned to have an area of 120,000 square metres, as stated by Walter von Linden, director of the "Deutsche Schachtbau" (German Mine Shaft Construction), during one of the post-war trials. Under the guidance of 400 German miners, the prisoners had to work around the clock in shift operation. Hersbruck
Hersbruck () is a small town in Middle Franconia, Bavaria, Germany, belonging to the district Nürnberger Land. It is best known for the late-gothic artwork of the Hersbruck altar, the "Hirtenmuseum" and the landscape of Hersbruck Switzerland. History Hersbruck was founded in 976 when a castle was built there near a bridge. The name probably comes from ''Haderihesprucga'', the bridge of Haderich. In the Middle Ages the town was situated on the Golden Route from Nuremberg to Prague, which brought prosperity to Hersbruck. In 1297 Hersbruck was given municipal rights, after 1504 the town belonged to the area of the free imperial town Nuremberg and in 1806 became Bavarian. Hersbruck was the birthplace, in 1673, of Jacob Paul von Gundling, the famous and unfortunate historian at the court of Brandenburg-Prussia.
