The Nura ( kk, Нұра, ''Nura''; russian: Нура) is a major watercourse of northeast-central Kazakhstan. It is long and drains an area of . Course The river rises in the Kyzyltas mountains, a subrange of the Kazakh Uplands and flows initially north-northwestwards for about . It then turns to the west and flows in that direction for , then southwest for . The Nura turns north near Esengeldi for about , eventually turning southwest as it draws close to Nur-Sultan near the river Irtysh. From there, it flows southwest for almost , through a series of lakes, finally ending in the endorheic Lake Tengiz. The river's largest tributaries are the Sherubainura, Ulkenkundyzdy, and Akbastau rivers. It is heavily used for irrigation and municipal water supply. The average discharge at the mouth is . Nura District
Nura District ( kk, Нұра ауданы, ) is a district of Karaganda Region in central Kazakhstan. The administrative center of the district is the settlement of Kievka. The district has a population of 22,569 as of 2019. History During the 1890s, a number of Ukrainians, Russians, and Germans began constructing settlements in the area, which was already home to approximately 330 villages of the native Kazakh people. On April 19, 1923, by order of the Kirghiz SSR, the Nurinsk Volost was created as part of the Akmola Uyezd. On March 10, 1932, the Nurinsk Volost joined the newly created Karagandy Oblast. Kievka became the district's administrative center in 1934. The 1930s saw a number of modernization programs implemented in the district, with electricity, telephones, and postal services being introduced. 16 schools were erected as part of a wider Soviet program to combat illiteracy known as likbez. Nursu (also, Nurs and Nur-su) is a village and municipality in the Shahbuz District of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. It is located 8 km in the north-east from the district center, on the foothill area. Nora Woodson Ulreich (1899 – October 26, 1950), known professionally as Nura, was an American artist, muralist, children's book author and illustrator. Early life and education Ulreich was born in Kansas City, Missouri. Her father was a Confederate veteran who had settled in Kansas City. She grew up there, ultimately attending the Kansas City Art Institute. Career A multidisciplinary artist, Ulreich was also an author, painter, muralist, textile artist and illustrator.
