Number Seventeen (design)
Number Seventeen was a Manhattan-based graphic design studio formed by Emily Oberman and Bonnie Siegler, in operation from 1993 to 2012. The studio specialized in graphics for print, film, and television media. Their clients included Saturday Night Live, Jane Magazine (among many others). They were also responsible for creating the iconic Will and Grace opening titles. Before forming Number Seventeen, Oberman worked with Tibor Kalman at M&Co. Emily Oberman
Emily Oberman (born 1962) is a New York-based multidisciplinary designer and a partner at design studio Pentagram. Formerly, Oberman was a co-founder of design studio Number Seventeen and a designer at Tibor Kalman's studio M & Co. Early life and education Oberman was born and raised in Yonkers, New York in 1962 by graphic designer Marvin and painter Arline Simon Oberman. As a child, she collaborated with her parents and was paid for the commercial work she did for them. She studied study motion design and filmmaking at Cooper Union. Oberman has taught at The Cooper Union, the School of Visual Arts and Yale University. Currently, she teaches at the School of Visual Arts. Bonnie Siegler
Bonnie Siegler (born 1963) is a New York-based graphic designer. Life She is the founder of the design studio Eight and a Half and, before that, co-founded the design studio Number Seventeen in 1993. Her clients include Participant Media, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Saturday Night Live, HBO, Brooklyn Public Library, Maveron, Random House, The Criterion Collection, The New York Times, Nickelodeon, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Its original target audience (pitched to advertisers) was aged 18–34, and was designed to appeal to women who did not like the typical women's magazine format. Pratt originally intended the magazine to be named ''Betty'', but she was voted down by everyone else involved in the making of the magazine. Tibor George Kalman (July 6, 1949 – May 2, 1999) was an American graphic designer of Hungarian origin, well known for his work as editor-in-chief of ''Colors'' magazine. Early life Kalman was born on July 6, 1949, in Budapest, to parents Marianne I. (née Deezsoffy or Dezsőffi) and George Tibor Kalman. He became a United States resident in 1956, after he and his family fled Hungary to escape the Soviet invasion, settling in Poughkeepsie, New York. Both of his parents had Jewish ethnic roots, and converted to Catholicism to avoid persecution, so 'Kalman only became aware that he was Jewish at the age of 18'. In 1967, he enrolled in New York University (NYU), dropping out after one year of Journalism classes to travel to Cuba to harvest sugar cane and learn about Cuban culture, as a member of the Venceremos Brigade. Steven Heller (born July 7, 1950) is an American art director, journalist, critic, author, and editor who specializes in topics related to graphic design. Biography Steven Heller was born July 7, 1950, in New York City to Bernice and Milton Heller. He attended the Walden School, a progressive prep school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, as well as military school. In 1968, he enrolled at New York University with a major in English, later transferring to the School of Visual Arts illustration and cartoon program but not graduating from either. After leaving SVA, he was hired to teach a newspaper design class. In 1968, he became the art director of the ''New York Free Press'' without formal education or credentials because of his leftist leanings, later attending some New York University lectures utilizing his press pass.
