''#1 Record'' is the debut studio album by the American rock band Big Star. It was released on April 24, 1972, by Memphis-based Ardent Records. Many critics praised the album's vocal harmonies and songcraft but ''#1 Record'' suffered from poor distribution and sold fewer than 10,000 copies upon its initial release. However, ''#1 Record'' gained wider attention in the late 1970s in the UK when EMI reissued it with '' Radio City'' as a double LP package due to increasing demand. The same combination was used when the album was released on CD in 1992. It is now widely-regarded as a seminal work in pop rock and power pop. In 2020 it was ranked number 474 on ''Rolling Stone'' magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. ''Rolling Stone'' also ranked the song " Thirteen" as number 406 on its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Pop rock (also typeset as pop/rock) is a fusion genre and form of rock music characterized by a strong commercial appeal, with more emphasis on professional songwriting and recording craft, and less emphasis on attitude than standard rock music. Michael Edward Mills (born December 17, 1958) is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer, and composer who was a founding member of the alternative rock band R.E.M. Though known primarily as the bass guitarist and backing vocalist of R.E.M., his musical repertoire also includes keyboards and occasional lead vocals. He contributed to a majority of the band's musical compositions and is the only member to have had formal musical training. Third/Sister Lovers
''Third'' (reissued in 1985 as ''Third/Sister Lovers'') is the third studio album by the American band Big Star. The sessions started at Ardent Studios in September 1974. Though Ardent created promotional, white-label test pressings for the record in 1975, a combination of financial issues, the uncommercial sound of the record, and lack of interest from singer Alex Chilton and drummer Jody Stephens in continuing the project prevented the album from ever being properly finished or released at the time of its recording. It was eventually released on March 18, 1978, by PVC Records. After two commercially unsuccessful albums, ''Third'' documents the band's deterioration as well as the declining mental state of singer Alex Chilton. It has since gone on to become a cult album, and was placed at number 449 on ''Rolling Stone''s 2012 list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Jody Stephens
Jody Stephens (born October 4, 1952) is an American musician and producer who has played drums in Big Star (with Alex Chilton of the Box Tops) and Golden Smog (with members of the Jayhawks and Wilco). After the deaths of Chris Bell in 1978, and Alex Chilton and Andy Hummel, both in 2010, Stephens is the last surviving original member of Big Star. Stephens also performs and records with Luther Russell as Those Pretty Wrongs. Their debut 7" was released in 2015 on Burger Records and their debut LP came out in 2016 on the Ardent Music label. Stephens contributed drums to "The Student Becomes the Teacher", a 2018 song by the Lemon Twigs, who have cited Big Star as being an influence. In 2019 Stephens produced the LP ''Electric Power'' for rock/power soul band the Reputations from Austin, Texas. Lennon–McCartney is the songwriting partnership between the English musicians John Lennon (1940–1980) and Paul McCartney (born 1942) of the Beatles. Chris Bell (American Musician)
Christopher Branford Bell (January 12, 1951December 27, 1978) was an American musician and singer-songwriter. Along with Alex Chilton, he led the power pop band Big Star (band), Big Star through its first album Number 1 Record, ''#1 Record'' (1972). He also pursued a solo career throughout the mid-1970s, resulting in the posthumous ''I Am the Cosmos'' LP. Colin Larkin
Colin Larkin (born 1949) is a British music writer. He founded and was the editor-in-chief of ''The Encyclopedia of Popular Music''.
