A by-election was held in the Cook Islands electorate of Tengatangi-Areora-Ngatiarua on 14 November 2019. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of MP Te-Hani Brown following an earlier by-election. The by-election was won by Te-Hani Brown. Te-Hani Brown
Te-Hani Rose Alexandra Brown (born 16 March 1996) is a Cook Islands politician and member of the Cook Islands Parliament. She is an independent. Career Te-Hani Brown was born in 1996 in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. Brown is the daughter of MP Rose Toki-Brown. She was first elected to parliament as a candidate for the Cook Islands Democratic Party in the 2018 election, defeating Nandi Glassie. At age 22, she was the youngest MP in the Pacific region. In January 2019 Brown resigned from the Democratic party to support the government of Henry Puna. Anti-party hopping laws forced her to resign from parliament. She contested the subsequent by-election as an independent, and was re-elected, but resigned the seat again just two weeks later when an electoral petition was filed. A by-election was held in the Cook Islands constituency of Tengatangi-Areora-Ngatiarua on 18 March 2019. The by-election was called following the defection of sitting MP Te-Hani Brown from the Democratic Party in January in order to support the government of Henry Puna, which triggered a by-election under election law. Brown ran as an independent with the support of the Cook Islands Party against Nandi Glassie, whom Brown had beaten in the 2018 Cook Islands general election. Nandi Glassie
Nandi Tuaine Glassie (21 May 1951 – 4 September 2020) was a Cook Islands politician who served as a Cabinet Minister. He was a member of the Cook Islands Party. Glassie was born in Atiu, and educated at Atiu Primary School, Tereora College, then St Stephens School in Auckland. He attended the University of Auckland, graduating with a bachelor of Arts, before completing a Masters in Public Policy at Massey University. He had a long career as a public servant for the New Zealand Department of Labour, the Manukau City Council, and the Cook Islands Government. From 2005 – 2006 he was chief of staff in the office of the Cook Islands Prime Minister. Glassie was first elected to Parliament in the 2006 snap election, defeating Cook Islands Democratic Party MP Eugene Tatuava. Atiu
Atiu, also known as Enuamanu (meaning ''land of the birds''), is an island of the Cook Islands archipelago, lying in the central-southern Pacific Ocean. Part of the Nga-pu-Toru, it is northeast of Rarotonga. The island's population has dropped by two-thirds in the last 50 years. Geography Atiu is a raised volcanic island surrounded by a reef from which rise cliffs of fossilized coral (''makatea''). The makatea cliff forms a ring round the island, creating a virtual plateau. Erosion of the inside of the ring has formed a dip of about into fertile land, which gradually rises again to a central flat-topped hill. The low swampy land consists of taro plantations, marshes and a lake, Tiroto. This fertile area also grows bananas, citrus fruits, pawpaws, breadfruit and coconuts. The Cabinet of the Cook Islands is the policy and decision-making body of the executive branch of the Cook Islands Government. It consists of the Prime Minister and a number of other Ministers, who are collectively responsible to Parliament. Legislative basis Unlike other Commonwealth Realms, the Cook Islands Cabinet has a formal legislative basis in the Cook Islands Constitution. Cabinet consists of the Prime Minister and up to six other ministers. Members are appointed by the King's Representative on advice of the Prime Minister, and must be Members of Parliament.
