Nova Scotia Route 253
Nova Scotia Route 253 is a collector road in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. It is located in the Halifax Regional Municipality and connects Armdale with Herring Cove. The route generally parallels the eastern coast of the Chebucto Peninsula. Between the junction with Route 349 in Armdale and Fortress Drive in Ferguson's Cove, it is known as Purcell's Cove Road. Afterwards and until Village Road in Herring Cove, it is known as John Brackett Drive. The last stretch in Herring Cove is known as Hebridean Drive. Jollimore, Nova Scotia
Armdale is a neighbourhood of the community of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. History Prior to European colonization, the Mi'kmaq inhabited these lands for thousands of years. When Europeans began colonizing the land surrounding Halifax Harbour, they built blockhouses. In 1751, there were two attacks on blockhouses surrounding Halifax. The Mi'kmaq attacked the North Blockhouse (located at the north end of Joseph Howe Drive) and killed the men on guard. They also attacked near the South Blockhouse (located at the south end of Joseph Howe Drive), at a saw-mill on a stream flowing out of Chocolate Lake into the Northwest Arm. They killed two men. In 1753, when Lawrence became governor, the Mi'kmaq attacked again upon the sawmills near the South Blockhouse on the Northwest Arm, where they killed three British. Chocolate Lake
Chocolate Lake is located in the Armdale neighbourhood of Halifax, Nova Scotia. The lake is surrounded by many private homes as well as a Best Western hotel and a city beach. As one of the nearest freshwater lakes to Downtown Halifax, Chocolate Lake is popular with swimmers and families during the summer months. Chocolate Lake has turtles, muskrats, and catfish. Although it is cited as contaminated, the City of Halifax tests the water quality periodically and the beach has rarely been closed for high levels of bacteria. Chocolate Lake is sourced by the Chain of Lakes, which is Halifax’s backup water supply. In the summer months, the beach is patrolled by lifeguards from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm; at least six deaths have been attributed to Chocolate Lake in roughly the past two decades. Sir Sandford Fleming Park
Sir Sandford Fleming Park is a Canadian urban park located in the community of Jollimore in Halifax Regional Municipality. It is also known as Dingle Park, named after the town of Dingle in southwestern Ireland. The park was donated to the people of Halifax by Sir Sandford Fleming. The centrepiece of the park is an impressive tower that commemorates Nova Scotia's achievement of representative government in 1758. Constructed between 1908 and 1912, the Memorial Tower was erected during the same period of building other commemorative towers in the British Commonwealth, notably Cabot Tower in Bristol, England (1898) and Cabot Tower in St. John's (1900). York Redoubt
York Redoubt is a redoubt situated on a bluff overlooking the entrance to Halifax Harbour at Ferguson's Cove, Nova Scotia, Canada, originally constructed in 1793. It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1962. History York Redoubt was a key element in the defence of Halifax Harbour in the 19th and 20th centuries, and saw many additions to its fortifications. It was a command centre for the local harbour defences in World War II, which included observation posts, a defensive minefield and a new gun battery below the fort at Sleepy Cove covering the anti-submarine net which stretched across the harbour's entrance from Fort McNab on McNabs Island. Purcell's Cove or Purcells Cove is a community within the Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia, Canada, on the west side of Halifax Harbour from the Northwest Arm to Fergusons Cove along Route 253. Herring Cove (2006 pop.: 2,790) is a Canadian suburban and former fishing community in Nova Scotia's Halifax Regional Municipality. It is situated on the eastern shore of the Chebucto Peninsula, south of Downtown Halifax. It is near the western approaches to Halifax Harbour, and can be reached both via Purcell's Cove along the coastal road and from inland via the Herring Cove Road through Spryfield. Ferguson's Cove, Nova Scotia
Fergusons Cove is a suburban community within the Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM), Nova Scotia on the western shore of Halifax Harbour between Purcell's Cove and Herring Cove along Route 253. The first 3 digits of the postal code in the area are B3V. History First settled in 1788 by William Glazebrook. It was initially known as Falkland, named after Lady Falkland, wife of Lucius Bentinck Falkland, one of the Lieutenant Governors of Nova Scotia. The Lynch family from Ireland settled in 1803. Another of the earliest settlers was William Embley from Newfoundland, who served in the Royal Navy. He relocated to Fergusons Cove after being discharged in 1811.
