Nottoway Archeological Site
The Nottoway Archeological Site is an overlapping series of prehistoric Native American settlement sites near the town of Stony Creek in Sussex County, Virginia. The site, located on a terrace above the Nottoway River, has documented evidence of occupation from c. 9200BCE (the Paleo-Indian period) to c. 1600 (the Late Woodland Period). Finds at the site have included significantly stratified occupation features such as hearths, as well as large numbers of stone points and hide scrapers. It was, at the time of its listing in 1988, one of a small number of sites that shed light on Native American occupation of the interior coastal plain in the area. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Stony Creek, Virginia
Stony Creek is a town in Sussex County, Virginia, United States. The population was 198 at the 2010 census. History In 1848, Stony Creek was a stop on the Petersburg Railroad. Glenview, Nottoway Archeological Site, and Rose Bower are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography Stony Creek is located at (36.946277, −77.399837). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km2), all of it land. Stony Creek is located along Interstate 95 at Exit 31 ( VA 40), but it is also served by Exit 33 (VSR 602) with US 301 running along the west side as a frontage road at both interchanges. The former Petersburg Railroad line is now part of the CSX North End Subdivision. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 202 people, 99 households, and 56 families living in the town. Sussex County is a rural county located in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 10,829. Its county seat is Sussex. It was formed in 1754 from Surry County. The county is named after the county of Sussex, England. Sussex County is included in the Greater Richmond Region. History Native Americans may have settled near Cactus Hill along the Nottoway River in what became Sussex county as long as 10,000 years ago. The Nottoway people, speaking an Iroquoian language, were later part of the Powhatan Confederacy. When colonists arrived from England in 1607, some traveled along the Nottoway River, but when they established the first counties, James City County included both sides of the James River all the way to the North Carolina line. The Nottoway River is a river in the U.S. state, U.S. State of Virginia and northeastern North Carolina that is 155 miles (249 kilometers) in length.
