Norðragøta
Norðragøta, also just referred to as Gøta is a village on Eysturoy, Faroe Islands. Overview The municipality of Gøta (''Gøtu kommuna'') was a municipality until 1 January 2009 when it merged with Leirvík into Eysturkommuna. Gøta consists also of the villages Gøtueiði, Gøtugjógv and Syðrugøta. The village lies on Eysturoy's east coast at the bottom of the inlet Gøtuvík. There is a museum called ''Gøtu Fornminnisavn'' with the famous house ''Blásastova''. The wooden church in the centre of the village is from 1833. Gøta is a place of great importance in the history of the Faroe Islands. One of the key figures in the Icelandic saga, Færeyinga saga, called Tróndur Gøtuskegg (Old Norse: Þrǫ́ndr í Gǫtu) lived here. Trondur (also called Tróndur í Gøtu) was a heathen Viking-chief who ruled all of the islands for a period of time. Eystur Municipality (Eysturkommuna) is a municipality (kommuna) in the Faroe Islands. In Faroese, ''eystur'' means east and so the municipality is ''East Municipality''. Jákup Pauli Gregoriussen
Jákup Pauli Gregoriussen (born 24 April 1932 in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands) is the leading architect of the Faroe Islands. He is also a graphic artist and author of publications about the Faroese church. Life Jákup Pauli was born in 1932 to the fashion designer Liffa Gregoriussen (née Arge) and the sailor Magnus Gregoriussen. He was educated at the architectural school of the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen. Among his best-known buildings are the Listasavn Føroya (1970) and its extension to become the National Art Museum in 1993. As a graphic artist, he designed stamps for the Postverk Føroya and illustrated books. His main themes are views of towns and villages, not only in the Faroes but also from his travels, including, amongst others, Russia, Poland, Rome, and Egypt. Víkingur Gøta
Víkingur is a semi-professional association football, football club in the Faroe Islands. The club was founded in 2008 after the merger of GÍ Gøta and Leirvík ÍF. The club is based in Leirvík, while the Serpugerði Stadium, stadium is in Norðragøta. Both villages are part of the same municipality Eysturkommuna, located on the island of Eysturoy and about 5 kilometers away from each other. The club won the Faroese championship for the first time in the 2016 season. In the 2017 season, Vikingur won the championship again. Gøtugjógv
Gøtugjógv ( da, Gøtegjov), Norðragøta and Syðrugøta are villages that are located in the Faroe Islands. These areas are located at the end of an inlet which is called 'Gøtuvík'. Gøtueiði
Gøtueiði ( da, Gøteejde) a town in the Faroe Islands, located deep in the Skalafjordur-inlet on Eysturoy, founded in 1850. The village has now grown towards its neighbour-village Skipanes. During the 1980s there were religious tent-meetings in Gøtueiði. Gotueidi consists of the villages/settlements Norðragøta (Northern Gøta), Syðrugøta (Southern Gøta), Gøtugjógv (Gøta's cleft) and Gøtueiði (Gøta's isthmus). They form part of the Eystur municipality. Færeyinga Saga
The Færeyinga saga (), the saga of the Faroe Islands, is the story of how the Faroe Islanders were converted to Christianity and became a part of Norway. Summary It was written in Iceland shortly after 1200. The author is unknown and the original manuscript is lost to history, but passages of the original manuscript have been copied in other sagas, especially in three manuscripts: ''Óláfs saga Tryggvasonar en mesta'', ''Flateyjarbók'', and a manuscript registered as AM 62 fol. The different sagas differ somewhat on the first settlement of the Faroes. Historians have understood from the beginning of ''Færeyinga Saga'' in ''Flateyjarbók'' that Grímur Kamban settled in the Faroes when Harald Fairhair was king of Norway (c.872-930 AD). Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands ( ), or simply the Faroes ( fo, Føroyar ; da, Færøerne ), are a North Atlantic island group and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Leirvík
Leirvík ( da, Lervig) is a town on the Faroe Islands and was an important regional ferry harbour at the east coast of the second-largest island Eysturoy. Leirvík has a population of 1,048 (2022). It was the only town in the municipality of Leirvík (''Leirvíkar kommuna''), however on 1 January 2009, it merged with Gøtu kommuna to make the new municipality called Eysturkommuna. Leirvík is important for its fishing industry. The Norðoyatunnilin, a submarine tunnel to Klaksvík to the east, was opened in April 2006. A district heating system pulls heat from the sea, increases the heat in a heat pump powered by electricity, and sends the heat to the large buildings in the town. History Archaeological excavations have shown that the town was first settled the 9th century by the Vikings. It is said that all inhabitants died in 1349 because of the Black Death. Tróndur Patursson
Tróndur Patursson (born 1 March 1944 in Kirkjubøur) is a Faroese painter, sculptor, glass artist and explorer. He was educated in Norway and was initially a sculptor. He has since become better known as a painter and glass artist. In February 2013 Patursson had an art exhibition at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts; it was an installation called "Migration", featuring approximately 90 of his trademark stained glass birds in the Grand Foyer windows throughout Nordic Cool 2013. The exhibition was a part of the ''Nordic Cool 2013''. In 1976 he joined Tim Severin in a transatlantic voyage in a replica 6th century leather-hulled currach named Brendan. The boat was named for the Irish monk Saint Brendan who was said to have made the same voyage centuries before the Vikings and Christopher Columbus.
