Norwood, Kansas
Norwood is a ghost town in north Franklin County, Kansas, United States. It is located approximately east of U.S. Route 59 on Stafford Rd, and south of the Franklin-Douglas county line. History The town was named after Henry Ward Beecher's novel ''Norwood: or, Village Life in New England''. A post office was established at Norwood in 1868 which closed and reopened a few times until it closed permanently in 1914. Today, the city is considered a ghost town, serving only as a stop on the recreational Midland Railway The Midland Railway (MR) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1844. The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) is a telephone numbering plan for twenty-five regions in twenty countries, primarily in North America and the Caribbean. Midland Railway (Kansas)
The Midland Railway is a heritage railroad operating 12 miles of line in Franklin and Douglas counties, Kansas between Ottawa, Kansas and Baldwin City, Kansas. It was chartered in 1982 to find an abandoned railroad line to operate. Midland purchased the line from Baldwin City to Ottawa, Kansas from the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1987, and began running excursion trains on part of the line later that year. Total length of the line is 11 miles (17.7 km). Midland operates a demonstration historic railroad, and its mission is to "educate the public about the role railroading played, and continues to play, in the commercial, social, and cultural life of America's Heartland." Midland's base of operations is the depot built in 1906 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway at 1515 High Street in Baldwin City. Henry Ward Beecher
Henry Ward Beecher (June 24, 1813 – March 8, 1887) was an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the Abolitionism, abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God's love, and his 1875 adultery trial. His rhetorical focus on Christ's love has influenced mainstream Christianity to this day. Beecher was the son of Lyman Beecher, a Calvinist minister who became one of the best-known Evangelism, evangelists of his era. Several of his brothers and sisters became well-known educators and activists, most notably Harriet Beecher Stowe, who achieved worldwide fame with her abolitionist novel ''Uncle Tom's Cabin''. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. It is a type of gazetteer. It was developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the United States Board on Geographic Names (BGN) to promote the standardization of feature names.
