Norton Woodseats F.C.
Norton Woodseats F.C. was an English association football club from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, but based for most of their existence in Dronfield, Derbyshire. History Formed in 1912, in their early years the club competed in local Sheffield leagues before entering the Sheffield Amateur League and then the Sheffield Association League, winning the latter in 1928. They entered the FA Amateur Cup for the first time in 1926 and the FA Cup a year later. They won the Association League again in 1938, and a year later reached the semi-finals of the Amateur Cup, losing to Willington at Ayresome Park in Middlesbrough. After the Second World War the club joined the Yorkshire League, gaining promotion to Division 1 in 1950. They finished as high as league runners-up in 1955, but were relegated back to Division 2 in 1964. Dronfield
Dronfield is a town in North East Derbyshire, England, which includes Dronfield Woodhouse and Coal Aston. It lies in the valley of the River Drone between Chesterfield and Sheffield. The Peak District National Park is to the west. The name comes from the Old English ''Dranfleld'', probably meaning an open land infested with drone bees. The town existed before the 1086 Domesday Book, and has a 13th-century parish church. In 1662, Charles II granted the town a market, although this later ceased. The industrial history of the town includes coal mining, the wool trade, the production of soap and steel, and engineering. Today a range of manufacturing firms still operate in the town. The Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior Football League is an English football league that was founded in 1983 by the merger of the former Sheffield Association League and Hatchard League. The league has three divisions – the Premier Division (which stands at level 11 of the English football league system), Division One and Division Two. FA Vase
The Football Association Challenge Vase, usually referred to as the FA Vase, is an annual football competition for teams playing in Steps 5 and 6 of the English National League System (or equivalently, tier 9 or 10 of the overall English football league system). For the 2017–18 season 619 entrants were accepted, with two qualifying rounds preceding the six proper rounds, semi-finals (played over two legs) and final to be played at Wembley Stadium. The 2022 winners were Newport Pagnell Town, who beat Littlehampton Town 3–0 at Wembley Stadium. History Until 1974, football players were either professionals or amateurs. Professionals were paid to play by their clubs, and the only cup competitions such clubs were allowed to enter were the FA Cup and, after 1969, for clubs outside the Football League, the FA Trophy. Ben Shearman
Benjamin W. Shearman (2 December 1884 – October 1958) was an English footballer who played as an outside left. Born in Lincoln he came to the fore with Rotherham Town before having spells with Bristol City, West Bromwich Albion and Nottingham Forest. He gained an FA Cup losers medal whilst with West Brom having played in the 1912 final. Despite missing four years of his career due to World War I he made 217 appearances in the Football League. Career Shearman was originally spotted playing in the Sheffield School League and was eventually signed by Rotherham Town. Renowned as a speedy winger with an accurate crossing ability he was transferred to Bristol City with whom he made his Football League début in 1909. After two seasons at Bristol he moved to West Bromwich Albion where he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career, featuring in the 1912 FA Cup Final where the Baggies eventually lost to Barnsley in a replay at Bramall Lane. Howard Johnson (footballer)
Howard Johnson (17 July 1925 – 15 June 2015) was an English footballer who played primarily as a defender. Born in Sheffield, he played in the Football League for Sheffield United and York City. Early life Born in the Pitsmoor area of Sheffield, Johnson attended the Firth Park Grammar School and later served in the navy. On returning to civilian life, Johnson trained to be an accountant and worked as a finance clerk while playing football part-time for Norton Woodseats. Playing career Johnson was signed on a part-time contract by Sheffield United in March 1951, with United donating £200 to his amateur club. After making his league debut against Brentford a few days later, Johnson made occasional first-team appearances for his first two seasons. Harry Gooney
William Harry Gooney (8 October 1910 – 11 June 1978) was an English footballer who played as a wing half. Career Gooney had captained both Sheffield and England boys while a junior and joined home-town Sheffield United immediately after leaving school in 1925, but he was under the allowed age for players and the club was forced to cancel his registration. Keen not to lose Gooney to another club United employed him as an office assistance but allowed him to train with the first team. Gooney also played as an amateur for local side Norton Woodseats until he was seventeen, at which point he officially re-joined United. Despite showing early promise as a youngster, Gooney struggled to maintain that into his adult career, and having been hampered by three successive bouts of pneumonia, he did not make his league debut until September 1930 only a month from his twentieth birthday.
