Northumberland Islands
The Northumberland Islands are a scattered island chain off the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia. Geography and history The Northumberland Islands are to the south-east of the city of Mackay roughly between the latitudes 21°S and 22°S. All islands are of the continental type. The island group was named by James Cook during his historic voyage along Australia's eastern seaboard in 1770, after the First Duke of Northumberland, Hugh Percy. Both Cook and Matthew Flinders make note of the island group in their journals, Cook describing them as such: In 1855, a botany expedition led by naturalist Frederick Strange visited the islands on his ship ''Vision''. Four of the expedition were killed by Aboriginal people at Middle Percy Island. Coral Sea
The Coral Sea () is a marginal sea of the South Pacific off the northeast coast of Australia, and classified as an interim Australian bioregion. The Coral Sea extends down the Australian northeast coast. Most of it is protected by the French Natural Park of the Coral Sea (french: Parc Naturel de la Mer de Corail) and the Australian Coral Sea Marine Park. The sea was the location for the Battle of the Coral Sea, a major confrontation during World War II between the navies of the Empire of Japan, and the United States and Australia. The sea contains numerous islands and reefs, as well as the world's largest reef system, the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1981. Avoid Island
Avoid Island is one of the Flat Isles, within the island chain called the Northumberland Islands, around off the eastern coast of Queensland, Australia, approximately south of Mackay. Owned and managed by the Queensland Trust for Nature (QTFN) since 2006, the island is the only privately owned permanent nature refuge in the southern Great Barrier Reef, and is an important breeding location for the vulnerable flatback turtle. History It is thought that either Captain James Cook or Matthew Flinders named the island, based on the level of difficulty for sailors, being tough to navigate around the nearby sandbars.
