Northumberland County, New South Wales
Northumberland County was one of the original Nineteen Counties in New South Wales and is now one of the 141 cadastral divisions of New South Wales. It included the area to the north of Broken Bay, which compasses the Central Coast region and Lake Macquarie as well as Newcastle(Greater Newcastle) in the Hunter region. It was bounded by the part of the Hawkesbury River to the south, the Macdonald River to the south-west, and the Hunter River to the north. Note that Northumberland County should not be confused with the former Northumberland County Council, a county council which existed between 21 July 1948 and 19 December 1963, and which despite the shared name was a legally distinct entity, with a distinct (albeit partially overlapping) territory, the Northumberland county district. Tarro, New South Wales
Tarro () is a north-western suburb of the Newcastle City Council local government area in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It, and parts of nearby Beresfield, was originally known as Upper Hexham, "lower" Hexham being an older settlement located about to the east on the Hunter River. The name "Tarro" reportedly means "stone" in an Aboriginal language. At the 2021 census, Tarro had a population of 1,703, almost all of which is concentrated in the south-western corner of the suburb. Charles Menzies (commandant)
General Sir Charles Menzies, (12 May 1783 – 22 August 1866) was a senior Royal Marines officer. Although he became a respected soldier, fighting with Horatio Nelson in the Napoleonic Wars and later rising to the rank of general before becoming aide de camp to Queen Victoria, Menzies is best remembered for the founding of Newcastle, New South Wales and the successful commencement of its settlement between the age of 21 and 22.
