Northside, San Jose
Northside is a historic neighborhood of Central San Jose, California, immediately north of Downtown San Jose. It borders Japantown to its west. History Northside is a historic turn-of-the-century neighborhood, made up of various styles, especially Spanish Colonial Revival and Queen Anne style architecture. Backesto Park was laid out in 1890, dedicated in honor of J. Pierre Backesto. The Backesto Park Fountain is a tiled memorial fountain to the Backesto family, installed in 1922, which is the oldest structure still in existence made by the Solon and Schemmel Tile Company, a famed Californian tile producer. Holy Cross Church was originally founded in 1906 as a missionary chapel, until the first church was built in 1919 in a Spanish Colonial Revival style. The first church was destroyed in a fire in 2014 and subsequently rebuilt in 2018. The Northside Neighborhood Association, founded in 1965, is the oldest neighborhood association in the city. San José Public Library
The San José Public Library ( es, Biblioteca Pública de San José) is the public library system of San Jose, California, made up of 23 branch libraries spread across the city. Organization Its central library, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, is also the main library of the San Jose State University. Built in 2003, King Library is the first joint use library in the United States shared by a major university as its only library and a large city as its main library. It has more than 1.6 million items. The building has nine floors that result in more than of space with a capacity for 2 million volumes. Downtown San Jose
Downtown San Jose is the central business district of San Jose, California. Downtown is one of the largest tech clusters in Silicon Valley, as well as the cultural and political center of San Jose. History The town was first settled in 1777. The area that now makes up downtown was first settled twenty years later, when the town of San Jose moved somewhat inland from its original location on the banks of the Guadalupe River. In 1850, San Jose incorporated to become California's first city and the location of California's first state capitol. Japantown (Japanese: 日本町; ''Nihonmachi''), commonly known as J Town, is a historic cultural district of San Jose, California, north of Downtown San Jose. Historically a center for San Jose's Japanese American and Chinese American communities, San Jose's Japantown is one of only three Japantowns that still exist in the United States, alongside San Francisco's Japantown and Los Angeles's Little Tokyo. History Japantown originally formed as a site for boardinghouses for Japanese men, just west of the 1887 "Heinlenville" Chinatown settlement, which was the block bounded by Sixth, Seventh, Taylor, and Jackson Streets.
