Northern Wells Community Schools
Norwell Community Schools is the school district that serves extreme Northern Wells County, Indiana. Norwell consists of five schools: Norwell High School, Norwell Middle School, Lancaster Central Elementary School, Ossian Elementary School, and Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church & School. NWCS serves the towns of Ossian, Uniondale, Tocsin, Zanesville, Markle and the extreme outskirts of the town of Bluffton. The district was formed after the 1967 consolidation of six township schools, with four original schools: OES, LCES, NMS, and NHS in 1967. The district was formerly named Northern Wells Community Schools until it was changed in 2023. Wells County is a county in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 28,180. The county seat (and only incorporated city) is Bluffton. Wells County is included in the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Fort Wayne– Huntington– Auburn Combined Statistical Area. History The future state of Indiana was first regulated by passage of the Northwest Ordinance in 1787. The governing structure created by this act created Wayne County as part of Indiana Territory in 1796. Norwell High School (Indiana)
Norwell High School is a public high school located approximately 4 miles southwest of Ossian, Indiana. About Norwell High School opened in the fall of 1967 after a consolidation between Ossian and Lancaster Central High Schools. The first graduating class, the Class of 1968 was separated between the two schools while construction was completed on the current campus. The Class of 1969 was the first to graduate from the school at its current location. The school serves the entire Northern Wells Community Schools school district. The school district is located in the northern part of Wells County, running from IN 124 north. Norwell High School is centrally located in the school district at US 224 and county road 100 E. Ossian, Indiana
Ossian is a town in Jefferson Township, Wells County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The town was named after Ossian, the narrator of a cycle of epic poems by the Scottish poet James Macpherson. The population was 3,289 at the 2010 census. History The Ossian post office has been in operation since 1850. In 1843, Indiana State Road 1 was made serviceable from Fort Wayne to Bluffton. On January 25, 1850, the Fort Wayne and Bluffton Plank Road Company was then organized. The plank road was a toll road; any horse or horse-drawn vehicle had to pay a toll. The Fort Wayne, Cincinnati, & Louisville Railroad was built through Ossian in 1869, though it was not in complete operation until the following year. Zanesville is a town in Allen and Wells counties in the U.S. state of Indiana, southwest of Fort Wayne. The population was 600 at the 2010 census, down from 580 at the 2020 Census. Bluffton is a city in Harrison and Lancaster townships, Wells County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 10,308 at the 2020 census and the estimated population is 10,390. The city is the county seat of Wells County. History Bluffton was platted in 1838 and incorporated in 1851 with 850 people, it was named for river bluffs near the original town site.
