Northern Hotel (Nevada)
The Northern Hotel was a three-story hotel located in Ely, Nevada. Three businessmen from Goldfield, Nevada, including Tex Rickard, commissioned the building's construction in 1906. The building was initially proposed as a three-story business block, although a decision was made during construction to open the upper floors as a hotel. The Northern Hotel opened in January 1907, and was well received, although it later closed in 1932, because of a lack of business. The Northern Hotel reopened in 1937, and was later destroyed entirely in a fire on May 17, 1964. History Construction In February 1906, Joseph E. Stevens and G. L. "Tex" Rickard, prominent businessmen from Goldfield, Nevada, visited Ely and became convinced that it presented profitable opportunities for them. Stevens stated that he was surprised by Ely's investment potential. That month, Stevens, Rickard, and Goldfield businessman W. S. "Ole" Elliott purchased two vacant lots for $15,000. The land was located at the corne ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Northern (genre)
The Northern or Northwestern is a genre in various arts that tell stories set primarily in the late 19th or early 20th century in the north of North America, primarily in western Canada but also in Alaska. It is similar to the Western genre, but many elements are different, as appropriate to its setting. It is common for the central character to be a Mountie instead of a cowboy or sheriff. Other common characters include fur trappers and traders, lumberjacks, prospectors, First Nations people, settlers, and townsfolk. International interest in the region and the genre was fuelled by the Klondike Gold Rush (1896–99) and subsequent works surrounding it, fiction and non-fiction. The genre was extremely popular in the interwar period of the 20th century. Northerns are still produced, but their popularity waned in the late 1950s. Characteristics Northerns are similar to westerns but are set in the frozen north of North America; that is, Canada or Alaska. Of the two, Canada wa ... Northern (Australian Film Genre)
Australian Western, also known as meat pie Western or kangaroo Western, is a broad genre of Western-style films or TV series set in the Australian outback or "the bush". Films about bushrangers (sometimes called bushranger films) are included in this genre. Some films categorised as meat-pie or Australian Westerns also fulfil the criteria for other genres, such as drama, revisionist Western, crime or thriller. A sub-genre of the Australian Western, the Northern, has been coined by the makers of ''High Ground'' (2020), to describe a film set in the Northern Territory that accurately depicts historical events in a fictionalised form, that has aspects of a thriller. The term "meat pie Western" is a play on the term Spaghetti Western, used for Italian-made Westerns. Since Westerns are a genre associated with the United States, the food qualifiers indicate the origin of other cultures that play with the characteristics of the genre. Historically some Australian westerns were made ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

4-8-4
Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, represents the wheel arrangement of four leading wheels on two axles, eight powered and coupled driving wheels on four axles and four trailing wheels on two axles. The type was first used by the Northern Pacific Railway, and initially named the Northern Pacific, but railfans and railroad employees have shortened the name since its introduction. It is most-commonly known as a Northern. Overview Development The wheel arrangement was a progression from the Mountain type and, like the Berkshire and Hudson types, an example of the "Super Power" concept in steam locomotive design that made use of the larger firebox that could be supported by a four-wheel trailing truck, which allowed greater production of steam. The four-wheel leading truck gave stability at speed and the eight driving wheels gave greater adhesion. The evolution to the type occurred in the United States of America soon after the Lima Lo ...
