Northern Ireland Masters
The Northern Ireland Masters is a professional golf tournament that was played at Clandeboye Golf Club in Newtownards, Northern Ireland. It was originally played as a one-off event on the Challenge Tour in September 2003. Darren Clarke won the inaugural event by two shots ahead of Stuart Little. The event returned in 2021 as part of the PGA EuroPro Tour's schedule. Newtownards
Newtownards is a town in County Down, Northern Ireland. It lies at the most northern tip of Strangford Lough, 10 miles (16 km) east of Belfast, on the Ards Peninsula. The 2023 Clutch Pro Tour, titled as the 2023 Mizuno Next Gen Series for sponsorships reasons, was the fourth season of the Clutch Pro Tour, a third-tier tour recognised by the European Tour. Challenge Tour feeder status In December 2022, it was announced that the Clutch Pro Tour and the Tartan Pro Tour would become official feeder tours to the Challenge Tour in place of the now-defunct PGA EuroPro Tour. 2003 Challenge Tour
The 2003 Challenge Tour was the 15th season of the Challenge Tour, the official development tour to the European Tour. The tour started as the Satellite Tour with its first Order of Merit rankings in 1989 and was officially renamed as the Challenge Tour at the start of the 1990 season. Simon Thornton
Simon Thornton (born 18 March 1977) is an Irish professional golfer. He won the 2013 Najeti Hotels et Golfs Open on the European Tour. Career Thornton was a late starter to golf, only taking up the sport in his late teens and turning professional at the advanced age of 28. He began as an assistant club professional at Royal County Down, playing in regional Irish PGA events, where his achievements included recording four straight monthly wins with the Ulster Golfers Alliance. He began playing on the Challenge Tour in 2009, finishing 51st before earning his European Tour card at qualifying school at the end of the season. His debut season on the full tour was unsuccessful, and he returned to the Challenge Tour for 2011, finishing in 12th position to secure a quick return to the European Tour. Paul Maddy (golfer)
Paul Michael Maddy (born 17 August 1962) is a Welsh retired professional footballer who played in Football League, most notably for Hereford United as a midfielder. He also played League football for Cardiff City, Brentford, Chester City and was capped by Wales at U21 level. Club career A midfielder, Maddy was a product of the Cardiff City youth system and made 43 appearances and scored three goals for the club. Jonathan James Caldwell (born 10 June 1984) is a professional golfer from Clandeboye, Northern Ireland. Amateur career Caldwell attended the University of South Alabama from 2004 to 2008. He competed in the 2007 Walker Cup. Professional career Caldwell played on the 2009 European Tour, but did not perform well enough to retain his card. He played a number of events on the Challenge Tour in 2009, 2010 and 2011. From 2012 to 2017 he played mostly on the PGA EuroPro Tour, winning tournaments in 2016 and 2017. He finished fifth in the 2017 Order of Merit to earn a place on the Challenge Tour for 2018. In June 2021, Caldwell claimed his breakthrough win at the Scandinavian Mixed, an event co-sanctioned by the Ladies European Tour. It is operated by the PGA European Tour and, as with on the main European Tour and the European Senior Tour, some of the events are played outside Europe. History The tour was introduced in 1986 and was initially called the ''Satellite Tour''. The Order of Merit was introduced in 1989, with the top five players on it winning membership of the European Tour for the following season. The following year the tour was renamed the Challenge Tour. Up to 1993 the Challenge Tour rankings were based on each player's best several results, but since 1994 it has been a straightforward money list, with all results counting.
