The Northern Football Netball League (NFNL), formerly known as the Diamond Valley Football League (DVFL) and later the Northern Football League (NFL), is an Australian rules football and netball competition based in the Diamond Creek, Victoria, Diamond Valley region of suburban Melbourne, Victoria (state), Victoria. History The league was founded in 1922, originally having six clubs, three of whom still participate. In 1941 the league went into recess for five years as a result of World War II, the competition recommencing in 1946. After the war the league continued to grow. Formation of Division Two In 1981 the league was split into two divisions. The top 10 teams at the end of the 1980 season formed Division One (Diamond Creek, Greensborough, Heidelberg West, Lalor, Macleod-Rosanna, Montmorency, North Heidelberg, Reservoir-Lakeside, Templestowe and Watsonia) for the 1981 season. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an Australian rules football playing field, oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Montmorency ( ) is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-east from Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Banyule local government area. Montmorency Football Club is an Australian rules football club in Montmorency, Victoria, currently competing in Division 1 in the Northern Football League. History The club was formed in 1924 by Harold Hodgson and was originally based at Memorial Park, Greensborough. In 1925, the club relocated to its current home and joined the Diamond Valley Football League, where it competed until 1931 before going into recess. The Club was revived in 1936 and returned to the DVFL, where it has remained ever since. Montmorency won its first premiership in 1951, followed by a second premiership in 1954. Hurstbridge is a town in Victoria, Australia, 28 km north-east of the Melbourne City Centre, located within the Shire of Nillumbik local government area. Hurstbridge recorded a population of 3,554 at the 2021 census. Hurstbridge lies between Wattle Glen to the south, Arthur's Creek to the north and Panton Hill to the east. History Before colonisation, the land around Hurstbridge was occupied by the Wurundjeri-Willam clan, an Aboriginal Australian people of the Woiwurrung language group. The Wurundjeri-Willam clan were part of the larger Kulin alliance. Hurstbridge was first settled by colonists in 1842 by Cornelius Haley, a grazier. Hurstbridge Football Club is an Australian rules football club located 34 km north east of Melbourne in the township of Hurstbridge. The club currently competes in the Northern Football League. History From the 1890s, social football was played at Lew Curtis's Flat, Hurstbridge. In 1914, the Hurstbridge Football Club was founded and matches were played in the Bourke Evelyn Football League. Hurstbridge transferred to the Heidelberg District Football Association for just the one season in 1921 before returning to the Bourke-Evelyn Football League. The Club moved activities to the newly developed Memorial Park (now known as the Ben Frilay Oval) in 1922.
