Northern Cement Basketball Team
The Northern Cement basketball team (popularly known as, the NCC basketball team) refers to the team that represented the national basketball program and training pool for the Philippines men's national basketball team from 1980 to 1986. The team was owned by businessman Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco, Jr. through his company, Northern Cement Corporation (NCC). Beginnings In 1980, businessman and ambassador Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco, founder and owner of Northern Cement Corporation, was appointed by the Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos to become the project director for basketball in the country. The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is a men's professional basketball league in the Philippines composed of twelve company-branded franchised teams. Founded in 1975, it is the first professional basketball league in Asia and is the second oldest continuously professional basketball league existing in the world after the National Basketball Association, NBA,Bartholomew, Rafe. Leo Austria
Leovino R. Austria (born March 14, 1958), better known as Leo Austria, is a Filipino former professional basketball player and the current head coach of the San Miguel Beermen in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Playing career Austria played his college basketball for the Lyceum of the Philippines University while also suiting up in the commercial Philippine Amateur Basketball League via Masagana 99. In 1984, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Ambassador's Cup before joining the PBA. Rey Cuenco
Reynaldo "Rey" Cuenco (March 17, 1960 – August 15, 1996) was a Filipino former professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association. Career highlights A native of Pampanga, Rey became part of the Masagana 99 team in the PABL. He was also a NCC player under coach Ron Jacobs, which participated in the PBA during the 1984 season. Cuenco was one of the most feared power forwards of his generation. He was a big man who was big enough to post up people but at the same time was quick enough to elude the raised hands poised to block him. He also had a decent range and was an efficient rebounder. Teddy Alfarero (April 2, 1963 – May 5, 2004) was a Filipino former professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association. Early life and high school career Alfarero didn't play organized basketball until his senior year at Lanao del Norte National Comprehensive High School. As a boy, he was tuned into music and played cymbals in his grandfather Enrique's 30-man orchestra that performed in town fiestas and weddings. His father was a saxophonist. Franz Pumaren
Franz Santos Pumaren (born December 5, 1963) is a Filipino former professional basketball player and coach. He played college ball for De La Salle University before playing professional basketball in the Philippine Basketball Association. He is the former coach of the Adamson Falcons in the UAAP. He is also the incumbent congressman from Quezon City's 3rd district. Basketball career Pumaren played most of his professional career for the San Miguel Beermen where he won 9 championships with the team which also included the 1989 Grand Slam. He also played for the Mobiline Cellulars. Alfie Almario
Alfie Almario (April 12, 1963 – October 3, 2001) was a Filipino former professional basketball player in the Philippine Basketball Association. Career Almario played collegiate basketball at DLSU and was one of the vital cogs of Northern Consolidated Cement squad which later became the core of the San Miguel Beermen. He was noted as the Triggerman of the RP Youth team that crushed China for the ABC youth championship at the Araneta Coliseum in 1982. The men's national under-19 basketball team of the Philippines represents the country in junior men's under-18 and under-19 FIBA tournaments. It is governed by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. The team has won 6 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championships making them second with the most wins in the tournament next to China. The Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA) was a sports association which existed in Manila, Philippines from 1938 to 1981. Throughout its existence, it staged various sports and was participated by prominent Philippine companies. The 1981 Southeast Asian Games, officially known as the 11th Southeast Asian Games, was a multi-sport event held in Manila, Philippines from 6 to 15 December 1981. This was the first time that the Philippines hosted the Games since its first participation in 1977, and by that, the Philippines became the sixth nation to host the SEA Games after Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.
