North Shropshire (UK Parliament Constituency)
North Shropshire is a constituency in the county of Shropshire, represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament by Helen Morgan of the Liberal Democrats after a by-election on 16 December 2021. The former MP, Owen Paterson of the Conservatives, resigned his seat on 5 November 2021 when faced with suspension from the Commons for a breach of advocacy rules and the consequent possibility of a recall petition. The seat had previously been a safe seat for the Conservatives. Constituency profile The area is rural and north of Shrewsbury, west of Newcastle-under-Lyme in the Stoke conurbation, south of Cheshire and Wrexham, having five small towns (in size order): Oswestry, Market Drayton, Whitchurch, Wem and Ellesmere. Rowland Hill, 2nd Viscount Hill
Rowland Hill, 2nd Viscount Hill (10 May 1800 – 3 January 1875), known as Sir Rowland Hill, Bt, between 1824 and 1842, was a British peer and Tory politician. Background Hill was the son of Colonel John Hill, eldest son of Sir John Hill, 3rd Baronet. His mother was Elizabeth, daughter of Philip Cornish, while the renowned military figures Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill, Thomas Noel Hill, Robert Chambre Hill and Clement Delves Hill were his uncles. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, where he graduated MA in 1820. Political career Hill was returned to Parliament for Shropshire in 1821, a seat he held until 1832, when the constituency was abolished. He then represented North Shropshire between 1832 and 1842. He succeeded his grandfather as fourth Baronet of Hawkstone in 1824. Charles Cust
Charles Henry Cust (27 September 1813 – 19 May 1875) was a British soldier and Conservative politician. Background Cust was the second son of John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow, and his first wife Sophia, daughter of Sir Abraham Hume, 2nd Baronet. John Egerton, Viscount Alford, was his elder brother. Military and political career Cust was a Captain in the Royal Horse Guards. In 1859 he was appointed High Sheriff of Northamptonshire and in 1865 was returned to Parliament for Shropshire North. He held the seat only until the following year, when he was succeeded by his nephew, Adelbert Brownlow-Cust Family Cust married Caroline, daughter of Reginald George Macdonald, in 1842. He died in May 1875, aged 61. Caroline died in October 1887. Adelbert Wellington Brownlow-Cust, 3rd Earl Brownlow (19 August 1844 – 17 March 1921), was a British soldier, courtier and Conservative politician. Background and education Brownlow was the second son of John Egerton, Viscount Alford, eldest son and heir apparent of John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow. His mother was Lady Marianne Margaret, daughter of Spencer Compton, 2nd Marquess of Northampton, generally known as Lady Marian Alford. His father had predeceased his own father in 1851 when Adelbert was only seven years old and thus the earldom and estates had passed to Adelbert's elder brother. Adelbert was educated at Eton. John Ormsby-Gore, 1st Baron Harlech
John Ralph Ormsby-Gore, 1st Baron Harlech (3 June 1816 – 15 June 1876), was a British peer and Conservative Member of Parliament. Biography Lord Harlech was the eldest son of William Ormsby-Gore, an Anglo-Irish aristocrat, and Mary Jane Ormsby. He was elected to the House of Commons for Carnarvonshire in 1837, a seat he held until 1841, and later represented North Shropshire from 1859 to 1876. On 14 January 1876, he was raised to the peerage as Baron Harlech, of Harlech in the County of Merioneth, with remainder to his brother William in the absence of male heirs. It was triggered by the resignation of the Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Owen Paterson on 5 November 2021.
