North Oaks Golf Club
North Oaks Golf Club (NOGC) is located in North Oaks, Minnesota, United States. The championship golf course was originally designed by golf course architect Stanley Thompson in 1950. The course is located just inside the private community of North Oaks. It has hosted numerous MGA Championships and a few MN section PGA Championships in 1954 and 2000. History In 1883 James J. Hill, known to be The Empire Builder, purchased a 3,070-acre piece of land from Charles D. Gilfillan. This piece of land Hill named the North Oaks Farm. When Hill passed on, his son, Louis W. Hill inherited much of the land. From here the Hill heirs took over and maintained the land. Fast forwarding to 1950, more land was bought and the planning process began. North Oaks, Minnesota
North Oaks is an exurban city north of St. Paul in Ramsey County in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 4,469 at the 2010 census. Formerly a gated community that now posts private access signage, all land is owned by homeowners with the North Oaks Home Owners Association maintaining all roads, plowing, parks, facilities, and recreation trails. Each homeowner's property extends halfway into the street. There is also a city government with a Mayor and City Council that administers basic services such as fire, police, planning, and licensing. Stanley Thompson
Stanley Thompson (September 18, 1893 – January 4, 1953) was a Canadian golf course architect, and a high-standard amateur golfer. He was a co-founder of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. Early life, family, education, and military service Stanley Thompson was born in Toronto, as the seventh of nine surviving children, of parents James and Jeannie Thompson, who had married in Middlebie, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland in 1880, and emigrated to Canada in June 1882. His father worked for the Grand Trunk Railway, which built a large depot in east-end Toronto. Stanley and his four brothers Nicol (1880–1957), Mathew (1885–1955), William J. Shotgun Start
A shotgun start is a golf tournament format in which all groups of players tee off simultaneously from different holes. A shotgun is shot into the air to signal the start of the tournament. Each hole on a course will be the tee off hole for each foursome. Group 1 would start from hole 1, Group 2 from hole 2, etc. Each group starts play at the same time. A shotgun start will allow a tournament to end at the same time it takes the slowest foursome to finish a full round or 18 holes of golf. If there are more than 18 teams, some double up at the 4 and 5 par holes as A & B teams.
