North Macedonia At The Paralympics
North Macedonia, following its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, made its Paralympic Games début at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, where it sent a single athlete ( Branimir Jovanovski) to compete in shooting. The country has competed in every subsequent edition of the Summer Paralympics, with very small delegations. It has never taken part in the Winter Paralympics. The only athletes to have represented North Macedonia at the Paralympic Games are Branimir Jovanovski (1996–2004), Vanco Karanfilov (2000–2016) and Olivera Nakovska (2004–2020), all three in shooting events. At the 2004 Games in Athens, Karanfilov won North Macedonia's first Paralympic medal as independent country: a silver in the men's air pistol event (category SH1). The 2012 Summer Paralympics, branded as the London 2012 Paralympic Games, were an international multi-sport parasports event held from 29 August to 9 September 2012 in London, England, United Kingdom. Swimming at the 1980 Summer Paralympics consisted of 192 events. In certain events, there were only three competitors, thus guaranteeing each a medal upon successfully completing the race. In others, there were fewer than three; in the women's 4x100 metre freestyle relay C-D, for instance, the Canadian team swam unopposed, obtaining gold upon completing the event. The women's 3x50 metre medley relay CP C was the only event in which no medal was awarded. The United States team were the only competitors, but were disqualified during the race; thus, no team completed the event. The 1980 Summer Paralympics ( nl, Paralympische Zomerspelen 1980), branded as the Olympics for the Disabled, were the sixth Summer Paralympic Games. They were held in Arnhem, Netherlands, from 21 to 30 June 1980. Background The Soviet Union, hosts of the 1980 Summer Olympics, were invited to host these Paralympics. However, disability sport was not there, and they passed; notoriously, a statement was issued denying the existence of any disabled people in the country. Soviet Paralympic teams were first represented in the 1988 Summer and Winter Games, also the last while the Soviet Union was extant. The first Paralympics on former Soviet territory would be in 2014. There was controversy during the preparation for these Games over the inclusion of a team from South Africa. Independent Paralympic Participants
Independent Paralympic participants were athletes from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona. Athletes from the parts of Yugoslavia still terming themselves "Yugoslavia" had competed as "independent Olympic participants" at the 1992 Summer Olympics, also hosted by Barcelona. They were not permitted to participate as "Yugoslavia", due to United Nations Security Council Resolution 757 placing sanctions on the country. The International Paralympic Committee thus recognises Yugoslavia's participation in the Paralympics from 1972 to 1988 and from 1996 to 2000 inclusive, but not in 1992, where its athletes officially belonged to no national delegation. Shooting at the 2012 Summer Paralympics consisted of twelve events. The competition was held in the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich from 30 August to 6 September. Classification Paralympic shooters were classified according to the extent of their disability. The classification system allowed shooters to compete against others with a similar level of function. Olivera Nakovska-Bikova
Olivera Nakovska-Bikova (born 11 November 1974) is a Macedonian paralympian and sports shooter who won the gold medal in the women's 10 metre air pistol SH1 at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, England. Olivera is also competing in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics Games. Career Olivera Nakovska-Bikova was born in Bitola, SR Macedonia. She went on to compete in shooting sports, becoming successful specifically with air pistols, winning the European Championships in 2001 and being part of the team who won the silver medal at the 2002 IPC Shooting World Championships. She attended her first Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece, in 2004, where she finished sixth in the competition. She qualified for the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, England, following a third-place result at a World Cup event in Zagreb in 2010.
