North Korean Animation
Animation in North Korea began in 1948 and has been a growing industry since. Before the Korean War, the Pyongyang animation study opened in 1948. In the same year, the north region of the parallel 38th became a communist republic. From 1948 until the 1980s, Pyongyang animation studio produced more than two hundred films. Aside from local productions, the SEK Studio (North Korea's primary animation producer) has been providing animation services for foreign clients in Italy, Spain, France, China, Russia, Japan and indirectly for the United States. In 2003, there were 1500 artists working in SEK, becoming one of the largest animation studios in the world. ''Squirrel and Hedgehog'' () is a North Korean animated series made by SEK Studio (). ''Squirrel and Hedgehog'' is one of the most popular animated series in North Korea. The show was supposedly discontinued in 2013, which was around the time North Korean state television changed its broadcasting schedule, which cut several animated programs along with it. The first episode of the show, produced in 1977, is based on a short novel published in a North Korean children's magazine in the 1970s. The short film was so popular with the public that the crew decided to turn the show into a series. The series was produced for a number of years and features both old and new animation styles, depending on the production year of each episode. ''Boy General'' () is a North Korean animated series made by SEK Studio (). The show was based on Goguryeo history. Nelson Shin
Shin Neung-kyun (born 1939), also known as Nelson Shin, is an animation director who is the founder and president of Akom Production Co., Ltd., in Seoul, South Korea. He founded Akom in 1985. Career In the 1970s, Shin worked as an animator at the DePatie–Freleng Enterprises and Marvel Productions, where he worked on the ''Pink Panther'' films and ''Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends''. Synopsis In this adventure, based on a famous Korean folk tale, a daughter sacrifices herself to restore her blind father's eyesight.
