North Jersey Shared Assets Area
Conrail Shared Assets Operations (CSAO) is the commonly used name for modern-day Conrail (reporting mark CRCX), an American railroad company. It operates three networks, the North Jersey, South Jersey/Philadelphia, and Detroit Shared Assets Areas, where it serves as a contract local carrier and switching company for its owners, CSX Transportation and the Norfolk Southern Railway. When most of the former Conrail's track was split between these two railroads, the three shared assets areas (a total of about 1,200 miles of track) were kept separate to avoid giving one railroad an advantage in those areas. The company operates using its own employees and infrastructure but owns no equipment outside MOW equipment. Trenton Subdivision (CSX Transportation)
The Trenton Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The line runs from CP PARK in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, northeast to Port Reading Junction in Manville, New Jersey, along a former Reading Company line. At its south end, CP Park (Park Junction), in Brewerytown, Philadelphia, the Trenton Subdivision becomes the Philadelphia Subdivision, Norfolk Southern has trackage rights to go through CP Park to access the Delair Branch. Lehigh Line (Norfolk Southern)
The Lehigh Line is a railroad line in central New Jersey, Northeastern Pennsylvania, and the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania. It is owned and operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway. The line runs west from the vicinity of the Port of New York and New Jersey via Conrail's Lehigh Line to the Susquehanna River valley at the south end of the Wyoming Valley Coal Region. Croxton is a section of Jersey City in the New Jersey Meadowlands in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. It is bounded by Secaucus at Penhorn Creek (named for the 17th century American colonial judge and President of the New Jersey Provincial Council and Commander-in-Chief of New Jersey, William Pinhorne). The Southern Tier Line is a railroad line owned and operated by the Norfolk Southern Railway in the U.S. states of New York and Pennsylvania. The River Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of New Jersey and New York. The line runs from the North Bergen Yard in Hudson County, New Jersey north to Ravena, New York, along the alignment of the West Shore Railroad, a former New York Central Railroad line. History The original line was opened in segments by a number of different companies from the 1860s to the opening of the full line in 1883, by which time it was known as the New York, West Shore and Buffalo Railway. Trackage Rights
Railway companies can interact with and control others in many ways. These relationships can be complicated by bankruptcies. Operating Often, when a railroad first opens, it is only a short spur of a main line. The owner of the spur line may contract with the owner of the main line for operation of the contractee's trains, either as a separate line or as a branch with through service. This agreement may continue as the former railroad expands, or it may be temporary until the line is completed. If the operating company goes bankrupt, the contract ends, and the operated company must operate itself.
