North Greenland Provincial Council
The Northern Inspectorate of Greenland also known as North Greenland was a Kingdom of Denmark, Danish inspectorate on Greenland consisting of the trading centers and missionary stations along the northwest coast of the island. History North Greenland was established in 1721. Its capital was at Godhavn (modern Qeqertarsuaq). The southernmost town of North Greenland was Egedesminde, which bordered Sisimiut, Holsteinborg, which was the northernmost town of South Greenland. This boundary between North and South Greenland ran at around 68°N latitude, and in the North, North Greenland stretched to 78°N to enclose Qaanaaq, Thule. Avannaa, originally Nordgrønland ("North Greenland"), was one of the three counties ( da, amt) of Greenland, until 31 December 2008. The county seat was at the main settlement, Qaanaaq. It was one of the least-densely-populated administrative divisions in the world, with 843 people living in 106,700 km2 of ice-free land for a density of 0.0079 people per square kilometre. Godthaab
Nuuk (; da, Nuuk, formerly ) is the capital and largest city of Greenland, a constituent country of the Kingdom of Denmark. Nuuk is the seat of government and the country's largest cultural and economic centre. The major cities from other countries closest to the capital are Iqaluit and St. John's in Canada and Reykjavík in Iceland. Nuuk contains a third of Greenland's population and its tallest building. Nuuk is also the seat of government for the Sermersooq municipality. In January 2021, it had a population of 18,800. The Royal Greenland Trading Department ( da, Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel, KGH) was a Danish state enterprise charged with administering the realm's settlements and trade in Greenland. Qaanaaq
Qaanaaq (), formerly known as Thule or New Thule, is the main town in the northern part of the Avannaata municipality in northwestern Greenland. It is one of the northernmost cities and towns, northernmost towns in the world. The inhabitants of Qaanaaq speak the local Inuktun language and many also speak Greenlandic language, Kalaallisut and Danish language, Danish. The town has a population of 646 as of 2020.
