North End is a neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York. Geography The North End neighborhood extends along Highland Avenue from just north of Ontario Avenue to Hyde Park Boulevard in a northeasterly direction dictated by the contours of the Niagara River like Lewiston Road and Niagara Scenic Parkway. Education One school serving the area is Maple Avenue Elementary School. History The North End, like Little Italy, has declined significantly over the years. Originally a booming industrial district, predominantly Polish and German, since the 1940s the areas surrounding Highland Avenue have been predominantly African-American, several of the industries have closed and the area has become neglected. Recently, "green" industry has begun to move into the North End, bringing back some jobs. Niagara Falls is a City (New York), city in Niagara County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, the city had a total population of 48,671. It is adjacent to the Niagara River, across from the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, and named after the famed Niagara Falls which they share. The city is within the Buffalo–Niagara Falls metropolitan area and the Western New York region. While the city was formerly occupied by Native Americans, Europeans who migrated to the Niagara Falls in the mid-17th century began to open businesses and develop infrastructure. Geography Little Italy is a Little Italy style neighborhood district located along Pine Avenue from Main Street to Hyde Park Boulevard within the city of Niagara Falls. The district is surrounded by residential homes and a number of non-Italian businesses. History Little Italy was historically the home to a large Italian-American population, with Italian Americans building such institutions as St. Joseph's Church, the Cristoforo Colombo Society, and Columbus Square Park. The Niagara Falls Station and Customhouse Interpretive Center is an intermodal transit complex in Niagara Falls, New York. It serves Amtrak trains and Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority buses, houses U.S. Customs and Border Protection offices servicing the Canada–United States border, and houses the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center. It is the western terminus of Amtrak's Empire Corridor and serves two ''Empire Service'' trains in each direction (terminating westbound) and one ''Maple Leaf'' in each direction daily. The station also provides a connection to NFTA route 50 and the Discover Niagara Shuttle buses. The facility consists of a complex built around the historic U.S. Customhouse, originally designed to service the U.S. side of the Niagara River border crossings from Canada. Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center
The Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center is a museum in Niagara Falls, New York, based on the history and legacy of the Underground Railroad. Opened in 2018, it is located on the first floor of a historic former U.S. Customhouse built in 1863 at the Niagara Falls Station and Customhouse Interpretive Center. History The idea of commemorating the Underground Railroad in Niagara Falls picked up steam in 2007 when former City Council Chairman Charles A. Walker and Kevin E. Cottrell pitched an idea they called "North Star on North Main." Funding from New York State began in 2008, when the State Legislature created the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Commission to work on an Underground Railroad museum in Niagara Falls. The following year, a state law governing Niagara Falls' use of Seneca Niagara Casino money was amended to give the commission $350,000 a year, a figure that was reduced to $200,000 a year in 2011.
