North Dakota Highway 8
North Dakota Highway 8 (ND 8) is a north–south state highway in North Dakota, United States. The highway is split into two segments. The southern segment is long and travels from Lake Sakakawea near Twin Buttes to South Dakota Highway 75 (SD 75) near Hettinger. The northern segment is long and travels from Saskatchewan Highway 9 (SK 9) in Northgate on the Canada–United States border to ND 23 near New Town. The highway was originally continuous but was separated by the formation of Lake Sakakawea in the 1950s. Hettinger ( ) is a city in, and the county seat of, Adams County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 1,074 at the 2020 census. North Dakota State University operates a livestock research station near Hettinger, which often partners with South Dakota State University's Antelope Range and Livestock Research Station for sheep research. The state highways in North Dakota are the state highways owned and maintained by the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT). North Dakota is a state located in the Midwestern region of the United States, along the Canadian border. Northgate Border Crossing
The Northgate Border Crossing connects the cities of Bowbells, North Dakota and Alameda, Saskatchewan on the Canada–US border. North Dakota Highway 8 on the American side joins Saskatchewan Highway 9 on the Canadian side. Canadian side The customs office opened in 1907 at Boscurvis about north of the border. The office operated under the administrative oversight of the Port of North Portal. A replacement facility, called Boundary Line, was constructed at the border in 1913. That year, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway had built southward to connect with the Great Northern Railway building northward. In 1916/17, the office name changed to Northgate. During Prohibition in Saskatchewan, the smuggling of liquor northward through Northgate could turn violent. The customs building was replaced in 1964. The former building was razed in 2014/15. Fort Berthold Indian Reservation
The Fort Berthold Indian Reservation is a U.S. Indian reservation in western North Dakota that is home for the federally recognized Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara Nation, also known as the Three Affiliated Tribes. The reservation includes lands on both sides of the Missouri River. Created in 1870, the reservation is a small part of the lands originally reserved to the tribes by the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851, which allocated nearly 12 million acres (49,000 km²) in North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming. McIntosh, South Dakota
McIntosh (Lakota: ''Maktáža'') is a city in and the county seat of Corson County, South Dakota, United States. The population was 173 at the 2010 census and 111 at the 2020 United States Census. History McIntosh was named for a sibling duo who worked for the railroad. The town was established in 1909. McIntosh was the site of a Cold War era radar station. New Town, North Dakota
New Town is a city in Mountrail County, North Dakota. The population was 2,764 at the time of the 2020 census, making it the 18th largest city in North Dakota. New Town was platted in 1950 as a replacement site for the residents of Sanish and Van Hook, as these towns were scheduled to be flooded by the creation of Lake Sakakawea, a reservoir to provide water for irrigation. It is the largest city and the administrative center of the Fort Berthold Reservation. New Town is home to Fort Berthold Community College. North Dakota Highway 23
North Dakota Highway 23 (ND 23) is a east–west highway in northwestern North Dakota. ND 23's eastern terminus is at ND 41 near Velva, and its western terminus at U.S. Route 85 (US 85) in Watford City. The only cities that ND 23 runs directly through are New Town and Watford City. It also runs through the unincorporated community of Keene. Other cities near the route include Makoti, Parshall, Plaza, Ryder, and Velva. Minot is north of the highway at its intersection with US 83. Route description ND 23 has its western terminus at a junction with US 85 and ND 200 in Watford City. The route starts concurrently with U.S. Route 85 Business (US 85 Bus.) for a short distance. It starts running north for less than a mile, then east outside of the city limits.
