Wilton is a city in Burleigh and McLean counties in North Dakota, United States. It is part of the " Bismarck, ND Metropolitan Statistical Area" or " Bismarck-Mandan". The population was 718 at the 2020 census. Founded in 1899, Wilton was named by General W. D. Washburn after the town of Wilton in his native state of Maine. History Wilton was platted in 1899 when the railroad was extended to that point. The city was named after Wilton, Maine, the native home of an early settler. Velva is a city in McHenry County, North Dakota, United States. Part of the Minot Micropolitan Statistical Area, it was founded in 1897 and the population was 1,086 at the 2020 census. Southeast of Minot, Velva is at the southernmost point of the Souris River. History Velva was settled in 1886 with the arrival of the Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste. Marie Railroad (Soo Line) into the area, and was chartered as a city in 1905. The Hotel Berry was built in 1906 to serve railroad passengers and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. McLean County ( ) is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 9,771. Its county seat is Washburn. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on March 8, 1883, with areas partitioned from Burleigh, Sheridan, and (now-extinct) Stevens counties. The county was named for John A. McLean, the first mayor of Bismarck. The county organization was completed on November 1 of that year. Its boundaries were altered in 1885, in 1892, and in 1908. It has retained its current configuration since November 3, 1908, when a portion of its previous territory was partitioned to recreate Sheridan County (Sheridan had been dissolved on November 8, 1892, with its territory annexed to McLean). McHenry County is a county in the U.S. state of North Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,345. Its county seat is Towner. McHenry County is part of the Minot, ND Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The Dakota Territory legislature created the county on January 4, 1873, with territory annexed from Bottineau County. It was named for James McHenry, an early settler of Vermillion (in present South Dakota). The county government was not organized at that time, nor was the county attached to another county for administrative and judicial purposes. The county organization was effected on October 15, 1884. The county boundaries were altered in 1885, 1887, 1891, and in 1892. It has retained its present boundaries since 1892. When the county was organized in 1884, Villard was named as county seat.
