North Dakota Elections, 2014
A general election was held in the U.S. state of North Dakota on November 4, 2014. Five of North Dakota's executive officers were up for election as well as the state's at-large seat in the United States House of Representatives. Primary elections were held on June 10, 2014. Attorney General Incumbent Republican Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, who has served in the office since January 1, 2001, was re-elected to a fifth term. Kiara Kraus-Parr, an attorney and adjunct law professor at the University of North Dakota, ran for the seat on behalf of the Democrats. Secretary of State Incumbent Republican Secretary of State Alvin Jaeger, who has served in the office since January 1, 1993, was re-elected to a sixth term. Ryan Taylor (North Dakota Politician)
Ryan M. Taylor (born July 22, 1970) is an American politician. A member of the Democratic-NPL Party, he served as the North Dakota State Senator from the 7th district from 2003 to 2013. Taylor spent his final two years as minority leader. He left the North Dakota Senate to run for the governorship, but was defeated by incumbent Republican Jack Dalrymple in the general election. Early life, education, and early career Taylor is a fourth-generation North Dakotan, raised by his parents Marshall ("Bud") and Liz Taylor on a ranch near Towner, N.D., in McHenry County. North Dakota Legislative Assembly
The North Dakota Legislative Assembly is the state legislature of the U.S. state of North Dakota. The Legislative Assembly consists of two chambers, the lower North Dakota House of Representatives, with 94 representatives, and the upper North Dakota Senate, with 47 senators. The state is divided into 47 constituent districts, with two representatives and one senator elected from each district. Due to the Legislative Assembly being a biennial legislature, with the House and Senate sitting for only 80 days in odd-numbered years, a Legislative Council oversees legislative affairs in the interim periods, doing longer-term studies of issues, and drafting legislation for consideration of both houses during the next session. The North Dakota House of Representatives is the lower house of the North Dakota Legislative Assembly and is larger than the North Dakota Senate. North Dakota is divided into between 40 and 54 legislative districts apportioned by population as determined by the decennial census. The 2000 redistricting plan provided for 47 districts. As each district elects two Representatives to the House, there are currently 94 representatives in the House. Representatives serve four-year terms. Elections are staggered such that half the districts have elections every two years. Originally, the North Dakota Constitution limited members of the North Dakota House of Representatives to two-year terms, with all representatives standing for reelection at the same time. Brian Kalk (born c. 1966) is a North Dakota Republican Party politician in the U.S. state of North Dakota. He served on the North Dakota Public Service Commission from 2009 to 2017. Kevin John Cramer (born January 21, 1961) is an American politician who has served as the junior United States senator for North Dakota since 2019. A member of the Republican Party, he represented North Dakota's at-large congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2013 to 2019. The North Dakota Public Service Commission is a constitutional agency that maintains various degrees of statutory authority over utilities, telecommunications, railroads, grain elevators, pipeline safety, and other functions in North Dakota. Established before North Dakota became a state, the Dakota Territory established a Board of Railroad Commissioners in 1885 to oversee railroads, sleeping car, and express companies. With the state's creation in 1889, the board was known as the North Dakota Board of Railroad Commissioners. The commission gained authority over the telephone companies in 1915, and over all public utilities (water, gas, steam heat, and electricity) in 1919. Cory Fong (born August 6, 1972, Great Falls, Montana) is a North Dakota public servant. He is a Republican, and the former state State Tax Commissioner. Fong was appointed Tax Commissioner in 2005 by Governor John Hoeven following the resignation of Rick Clayburgh (who left the job to become executive director of the North Dakota Bankers Association).
