North Concho River
The North Concho River is a river in west-central Texas and one of three tributaries of the Concho River. The river is long. The other two tributaries are the Middle Concho and South Concho Rivers. The Concho River flows into the Colorado River (in Texas, not to be confused with the Colorado that flows through Arizona and Nevada). Course The North Concho River headwaters start in Glasscock County and flow toward Sterling City in Sterling County, then Water Valley, Carlsbad, and Grape Creek in Tom Green County, and into O.C. Sterling County, Texas
Sterling County is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 1,372, making it the ninth-least populous county in Texas. Its county seat is Sterling City. The county is named for W. S. Sterling, an early settler in the area. Sterling County was one of 30 prohibition, or entirely dry, counties in the state of Texas, but is now a moist county. San Angelo
San Angelo ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Tom Green County, Texas, United States. Its location is in the Concho Valley, a region of West Texas between the Permian Basin to the northwest, Chihuahuan Desert to the southwest, Osage Plains to the northeast, and Central Texas to the southeast. According to a 2019 Census estimate, San Angelo had a total population of 101,004. It is the principal city and center of the San Angelo metropolitan area, which had a population of 118,182. Grape Creek is a census-designated place (CDP) in Tom Green County, Texas, United States. It is part of the San Angelo, Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Grape Creek was 3,154 at the 2010 census. Geography Grape Creek is located at (31.581679, -100.547371). According to the United States Census Bureau in 2000, the CDP has a total area of 17.2 square miles (44.6 km), all of it land. Prior to the 2010 census, the CDP lost area, reducing it to a total area of , all land. Carlsbad is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in northwest Tom Green County, Texas, United States. It lies along U.S. Route 87 northwest of the city of San Angelo, the county seat of Tom Green County. Its elevation is 2,024 feet (617 m). Although Carlsbad is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 76934; the ZCTA for ZIP Code 76934 had a population of 1,332 at the 2000 census. This was a new CDP for the 2010 census with a population of 719. Located along the North Concho River, Carlsbad was founded in 1907 under the name of Hughes. When the Post Office required the community to be renamed, residents chose the name of the spa town of Karlsbad in Bohemia, after local wells were discovered to yield mineral water. Water Valley, Texas
Water Valley is an unincorporated community in Tom Green County, Texas, United States. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 120 in 2000. The community is part of the San Angelo, Texas metropolitan statistical area. Geography Water Valley is situated along U.S. Highway 87 in northern Tom Green County, approximately 22 miles northwest of San Angelo and 64 miles southeast of Big Spring. Climate History Among the early are settlers was Captain William Turner, who arrived ''circa'' 1878. He established the Whitbarrow Ranch and built a stone house that later served as a rest home for soldiers during World War II. The community was founded by two men known as Phelin and Glynn. They dammed the North Concho River and dug an irrigation ditch that opened up the area to settlers, most of whom were English immigrants. Sterling City, Texas
Sterling City is the county seat of Sterling County, Texas, United States. Its population was 1,121 at the 2020 census. History Sterling City was named for W.S. Sterling, a buffalo hunter and Indian fighter. Land for the new town was donated in January 1891 by R.C. Stewart, and was platted by H.B. Tarver in February. That same year, it was designated the seat of Sterling County. The town soon grew to 300 residents and had its own newspaper, a hotel, a post office, several other businesses, a school, and three churches. Sterling City was a stop on the Santa Fe Railroad by 1910, but the service was eventually abandoned. The depot still exists as a tourist site. During World War Two, Sterling City's population decreased by 10%.
