North Carolina Highway 345 (NC 345) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of North Carolina connecting Wanchese and Manteo on Roanoke Island. The highway begins at The Lane and Thicket Lump Drive south of the town marina. Following Mill Landing Road through Wanchese, the road eventually becomes the western boundary for the Roanoke Island Marshes Dedicated Nature Preserve, before reaching its northern terminus at US 64. Route description NC 345 is a two-lane road that begins at the intersection of Thicket Lump Drive/The Lane in southeastern Wanchese. At first the highway runs northeast along Mill Landing Road, paralleling the curve in the Roanoke Sound. As the road approaches the town marina it turns directly toward a north/northwestern direction providing access to several docks along the western side of the marina. Wanchese, North Carolina
Wanchese () is a census-designated place (CDP) on Roanoke Island in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It was named after Wanchese, the last known ruler of the Roanoke Native American tribe encountered by English colonists in the sixteenth century. The population was 1,642 at the 2010 census. Today, Wanchese is the center of commercial fishing and boatbuilding on the Outer Banks. The residents of Wanchese are governed by the Dare County Board of Commissioners. Manteo () is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States, located on Roanoke Island. The population was 1,602 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Dare County. Dare County is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 36,915. Its county seat is Manteo. Dare County is named after Virginia Dare, the first child born in the Americas to English parents, who was born within the county's current borders. Founded in 1870 from parts of Tyrrell, Currituck and Hyde counties, it consists of a large segment of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, along with Roanoke Island and a peninsula of land attached to the mainland. Roanoke Sound
The Roanoke Sound is a sound that separates Roanoke Island from Bodie Island of the Outer Banks. To the north of the Roanoke Sound lies the Albemarle Sound and to the south lies the Pamlico Sound. One bridge, which carries U.S. Highway 64, crosses the sound. In a historical context, this was also the name first given to the present-day body of water known as the Albemarle Sound. Fort Raleigh National Historic Site preserves the location of Roanoke Colony, the first English settlement in the present-day United States. The site was preserved for its national significance in relation to the founding of the first English settlement in North America in 1587. The colony, which was promoted and backed by entrepreneurs led by Englishman Sir Walter Raleigh (''ca.'' 1554–1618), failed sometime between 1587 and 1590 when supply ships failed to arrive on time. Manns Harbor is a census-designated place (CDP) in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 821. Overview Before the first settlers arrived in the vicinity of Manns Harbor, the Native American village Dasamongueponke existed on or close to the site. Located east of the intersection of U.S. Routes 64 and 264, it is nestled along the western bank of Croatan Sound. Before 1957, Manns Harbor used to harbor a ferry that traversed the sound and provided access to Roanoke Island. Today, the William B. Nags Head is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. It is a busy vacation spot because of its beaches and sand dunes of Jockey's Ridge. The population was 3,146 at the 2020 census. History Early maps of the area show Nags Head as a promontory of land characterized by high sand dunes visible from miles at sea.
